It looks like the rumor was true (see Story), Match.com released a press release yesterday which confirm that they have made a deal to acquire the dating site Singlesnet.com. Financial terms of the deal have yet to be released but Match CEO Greg Blatt did state that Singlesnet will continue to be run largely as a standalone business. Adrian Ong of Match.com will be taking over the helm from the previous owner of Singlesnet, Quinn Lipin. Mr Lipin will still continue to work for Singlesnet.com as an executive.

Singlesnet was once the most visited dating site in the USA back in December 2008. Since then traffic has slowly declined with a major drop happening in February 2009 from 7 million unique visitors to just under 5 million.

2009 Dating Sites Reviews Choice Awards - United Kingdom
Recipient
Match.com UK

The Editor's Top Pick - United Kingdom Award goes to the dating site, Match.com UK. This is the first year for an award specifically given to a United Kingdom dating service. We decided to offer one this year as our UK readership has increased substantially. Why is UK.Match.com the winner of this award? You can read below to find out.

First off, Match.com in the UK had a busy year in 2009. We saw a partnership deal between Meetic and IAC (who owns Match.com) which saw the handing over of the Match.com European operations to one of Europe's biggest dating service, Meetic. By consolidating services between the 2 companies, not only did the 2 companies save money, which could now be spent in other important areas, but overall customer service and satisfaction increased as well. Match.com UK also went in a new direction with marketing. They hired a new advertising agency named Mother, and have spent according to some estimates over £6m on advertising in the United Kingdom over the last year. There new ads are smart and have informed the public on what Match.com offers. This has resulted in an increase in quality traffic to the dating service. A prime indication of how well a dating service is doing, is by how many members they have.

Match.com also continues to research relationships and love, to see what attitudes, personality traits and expectations are compatible or not between people. This research is not only used to improve their matching tools, but to educate Match.com members as well. Visitors to the dating site can view their latest research study called "The LoveGeist Report 2009". The data in the report is the result of a study of over 16,000 people. Included with the report is an interactive map which allows you to view the summary results of the report by regions in Britain.

There are about 3 popular dating services in Britain and we feel the UK version of Match.com comes out on top. For singles who wish to meet the love of their life, there is no better spot to start than Match.com.

OkCupid and Web Traffic Numbers

I found an article which talks about the trouble with web traffic numbers. I have talked about this issue before but it is interesting to see it from the point for view of a large dating site like OkCupid. In January comScore reported that OKCupid had 735,000 unique visitors in January, 2010. This was an increase of about 200,000 from a year ago according to comScore. Sam Yagan, OKCupid chief executive stated that:

... comScore was significantly undercounting the site’s traffic.

For proof he gave the author of the article, Carl Bialik a Google Analytics report for OkCupid which showed almost 4.3 million unique visitors last month. This shows that comScore's estimate is off by 600 percent. All I can say is I am not surprised. Web traffic estimates from these types of traffic sites are usually way off the mark. For example our review site is vastly under estimated as well, in most cases over 4 times as much. The other statistic in which Sam Yagan mentioned was that during a normal day in February (Feb 18th I believe) they had 270,000 unique logins to their dating site. With almost a couple hundred thousand people logging in during a 24 hour period, this makes comScore's estimate of 735,000 unique visitors in a month seem laughably low.

Catalyst Group Study Compares eHarmony and Match.com

The Catalyst Group released a 48 page document (see below) which outlines the experiences of 16 online daters of which 8 used Match.com and 8 used eHarmony. As stated in the report, the intention of the document "is to highlight broad themes and provide insights as to how these sites are used".

Note: Unfortunately the source to the video and/or image which once was displayed here has since been removed by the authors for an unknown reason.

I found the report itself to be more of a comparison of how Match.com and eHarmony work. The bulk of the report tackles how each dating site handles the online dating process. They broke it up into 3 phases, which are Identifying Matches, Reviewing Profiles, and Communication. The authors did include some information about what the users did and did not like for each site but there was no real comparison as to which site approach which phase better, and why (or how they could improve).

eHarmony nor Match.com participated in any way with the study. After reading it through thoroughly, I found it is an excellent source of information for those of you who wish to know how Match.com and eHarmony work and how their approaches to online dating differ. As mentioned in the limitations, the study sample is very small and may not represent the views of the overall population. But, what were the researchers' conclusions? Near the beginning of the Match.com and eHarmony Usability Study of Online Dating they list some general perceptions. The researches were told by the participants of the study that online dating sites come up short on their claims about matching. Most users had little confidence in the technology and the process behind the matchmaking. Despite all this, people use dating sites because they do offer a pool of potential matches for them to access when the more traditional ways of finding a date (bars, family, friends, etc...) do not work.

In the end the researchers concluded that eHarmony was preferred by singles who needed/wanted to be led every step of the way in the online dating process. This was especially helpful for those singles that lack self confidence in communicating with their matches. On the other hand, Match.com was seen as a "good compromise between the restrictions of eHarmony and the wild west of free sites".

The recipient of the Editor's Top Pick - Wealthy Award is MillionaireMatch.com. Since we started our Dating Sites Reviews Choice Awards in 2007, MillionaireMatch.com has won in this category each year. Why do they keep winning? It is simple, this dating site offers what most Sugar Daddy sites do not, active members. This service continues to grow every year while it leaves the competition in the dust. Sure there are other dating sites aimed at matching wealthy men with attractive women but, none offer the quantity and quality of members in which MillionaireMatch.com has.

MillionaireMatch.com also has implemented other features, which contributes to their success. Guest members (free) can reply to other member's emails for no cost. This means, paid members can contact any person on the site they find without having to worry about if the person can respond or not. Another important aspect of Millionairematch.com is, there is no on site advertising. Their goal is help find you a match, not try and distract you with advertisements for other products or dating sites. It always makes me wonder if a dating site is advertising their competitors to make money, how well are they actually doing?

If you are a wealthy single, or interested in meeting one, then MillionaireMatch.com should be your first stop online in your search. Their membership base is huge, and members can get their photos, education and income level verified by the dating site. This means if you are interested in a verified member, you do not have to worry about if the person is actually who they say they are, since it already has been confirmed.

This Year's Runner Ups for this award include (in no particular order): Sugardaddie.com and WealthyMen.com .

OKCupid Says Men Are Looking for Older Women and Just Don’t Know It

If you missed installment one of this article series on OKCupid’s report on age-based dating practices, click here to read OKCupids Asks: Why Aren’t Men Into Older Women?

According to OKCupid, men are pretty much missing the boat when it comes to the women available in the dating pool. Why? Because they skew their age preferences toward women significantly younger and pay little attention to those even marginally older. Men would do much better, they say, at meeting their goals for a healthy, happy relationship if they didn’t rule out the “older woman.” OKCupid used a sample set of 100,000 female users in their study and narrowed down the case for older women into three key areas: sexuality, attitude and looks.

It’s incredible what OKCupid’s user data revealed about sexual preferences for the female population. The original post has a really cool “heat map” that shows, by sliding a slider from age 18 to 40, how female users’ sexual preferences change with age. The younger lean towards preferring sex once per week, while that preference distinctly changes as you approach and move beyond women in their 30s. (Guys – take note. No more complaints about lacking an active sex life if you’re ruling out women who may be a bit older than you!)

Older women also have healthier perspectives on sexual issues like contraception and STD testing according to the post, with older women feeling more strongly about protected sex and frequent STD testing. In a nutshell, younger females seem to want less frequent sex, do it unprotected and are less interested in regular STD testing. (Guys?)

The overall attitude of the older woman is better adjusted as well, according to OKCupid. Their member profile data indicated that women in their 40s have significantly high levels of self-confidence, are happier with their lives overall and feel that the best days of their lives are ahead of them. Now that’s a refreshing outlook, isn’t it? If you’re worried about getting marched to the altar, however, fear no more. 96% of women in their 40s are content being in a relationship that may not end in marriage, but only 62% of 18-year-old women can say the same.

The final area of comparison: looks. OKCupid cites a misconception that women become less attractive as they get older. They also rule-out those who are in long-term relationships or already married and may tend to pay less attention to their appearances. They concluded: women are equally as attractive, regardless of age. Want a real shocker? Check out the fabulous photos of actual OKCupid users at the end of the article. We think you’ll have a hard time guessing who’s the “older woman!”

Bottom line for the guys: maybe you want to take another look at your age preferences in your online dating profile. If you’re willing to pass up a great sex life with an attractive woman with a killer sense of self-confidence, well – your loss! But they’re out there and waiting – all you have to do is click.
