It’s Just Lunch Must Face Class-Action Lawsuit

San Diego-based dating service It’s Just Lunch has been ordered by a U.S. judge in New York to face a class-action lawsuit filed by some of its former clients.

The plaintiffs in the case are arguing that the company fraudulently misled them about their services, charging $1,000 per year for services that they did not deliver. This includes falsely promising clients (many affluent and highly educated women) that its staff would “hand select” appropriate matches for dates.

Judge Sidney Stein of the U.S. Court in New York wrote this of the lawsuit: "In short, virtually all evidence in the record indicates that during the period at issue, IJL staff relied on a uniform script to inform prospective customers during initial interviews that IJL already had at least two matches in mind for those customers' first dates regardless of whether or not that was true.”

While their argument got approved to go to trial in New York, the judge did refuse to certify a nationwide class-action lawsuit, citing that there were too many differences in the laws of individual states in regard to this particular case.

While the plaintiffs consider this a victory, It’s Just Lunch has yet to respond to the charges.

According to Courthouse News Service, It's Just Lunch sales staffers have an "info-call script" during their training at "First Date University" to guide them through calls with potential customers, the complaint alleges. They were not allowed to deviate from the script, according to President Melissa Brown’s admission to the court. At the heart of the issue for the judge is the part of the script says, “Ok, so far I have 3-4 ideas for your first date,” meaning matches that would be suitable for the client, even if the call center employee didn’t have any matches at the time.

IJL offers an initial client interview, the selection of a potential partner based on a client's desires, goals and motivations; and the arranging of lunch at a restaurant, or alternatively an after-work drink or a weekend brunch.

It’s Just Lunch proclaims itself to be “the world’s #1 personalized matchmaking service” on its website.

If more ex clients join this class-action lawsuit, IJL might have to reconsider their marketing along with their business decisions.

Super Bowl Sunday Dating Statistics

It's Just Lunch recently shared their survey about dating plans and dating etiquette for Super Bowl Sunday. Here is what the matchmaking service found out:

  • 58% of singles say that they would bring a first date to a Super Bowl party.
  • 74% of men and 82% of women stated that they will root against their date's team at the Super Bowl party.
  • 65% of men and 72% of women will not stick to their diets during the game.
  • Don't talk about anything except football. 52% of singles would try to turn the conversation back to football and if they persisted in non football talk, then 31% of singles would never ask them out again to a sporting event.
  • If you had a ticket to the Super Bowl, 46% of men would prefer to bring a date rather than their best friend to the actual game. For women it was 37%.

It's Just Lunch partnered with American Way In Flight Magazine to poll airline passengers about dating. One of the first question they asked passengers is, how long does it take them to decide on the first date whether they will go on a second date with the person?

  • 13 percent would give their date longer than 1 hour.
  • 22 percent usually gives a date 1 hour.
  • 66 percent of respondents said in the first half hour of meeting a person is when they decide if they will ever go out with the person again.
  • 16 percent said they decide in 5 minutes.
  • A further 5 percent know right away.

It's Just Lunch has recently expanded and opened a physical location in the St. Cloud area. Over the last 3 years at the Minneapolis headquarters, the director, had noticed an increasing number of singles from the St. Cloud using their matchmaking services. Since It's Just Lunch requires an in-person interview it was decided back in April that a additional location which was closer to these clients was required in Waite Park.

The Minneapolis headquarters has 10 employees. When someone becomes a client of It's Just Lunch, there is a personal hour long interview which you talk more about yourself and what you want in a match. Matches are then hand selected and the staff coordinates the dates between the two clients. After each date, the client provides feedback which is then used to help further narrow a match for them. Memberships can be put on hold anytime if a couple want to explore a relationship further.
