Stitch Review
Stitch Reviews
Stitch was launched in 2014 and is a community, companionship, and activities site for older adults 50 and above. They have over 150,000 members in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. As of 2020, the Stitch community has been setup as a not-for-profit charity, with its goals to address loneliness and social isolation for older adults. This is an important issue which has a huge impact on the wellbeing and health of seniors.
Stitch is about making new social connections. It was created to help members find companionship in all its forms, everything from friendship to romance, and all that is between. Stitch has made activities a big part of what the community is about. They feel you are far more likely to find a like-minded companion by meeting in real life doing activities you both enjoy, as opposed to browsing endless profiles online at home alone.
One of the main goals of Stitch is to bring people together across the entire community, no matter who they are. They intentionally do not ask members for their religion and ethnicity as they want to see social connections happen across all boundaries.
For this review we will be looking at Stitch in terms of what it offers for those interested in meeting others online romantically. This means we will be looking at it from a dating service perspective. We will be touching on other aspects of what Stitch is about but will not dive deep into those areas of the service.
Before you even join Stitch, you can tell right away that it is a professional service that cares about the global community it is building. Whether it is the introduction video on the homepage from founder Andrew Dowling or the online videos and help section, everything has been designed and developed with great care to make things as easy as possible for the members. For example, when you create your account each profile question has its own page with a description and tips further explaining why Stitch is asking for the information. Large graphics and buttons are used which is not only pleasing to the eye but makes things easier to understand especially for those who may not use computers on a regular basis.
Once your initial signup is complete you will get the chance to browse the Stitch Service. The first thing most people check out is the Community section as this is the heart of Stitch. Here you will find a list of activities and events being organized by other members near your location. You can search for different activities and filter them by distance and the groups you belong to. If you find an activity you want to know more about just tap/click on it to find out more information. If the activity sounds interesting just tap on the "Attend" button to reserve your spot, it is that easy. There are plenty of activities for a large range of interests including single events, those interested in music, and book clubs. Stitch Groups work in a similar way and is a place where members can discuss topics related to the group, help organize events, and even have virtual group meetings.
If you are more interested in meeting up with someone on an individual basis then the Members section is what you want to check out. First, you will need to get your profile verified. The easiest way to do this is by uploading a photo of yourself holding a piece of paper with your unique Stitch verification number. Once complete you just need to wait 24 hours or less until someone on the Stitch team verifies that your profile photos matches your verification photo. Your then good to go and check out the full profiles of other Stitch members. The Members section displays profiles to you based on a several criteria including the type of relationship each of you are looking for, the distance between you, and the interests you share. Only about 20 profiles are listed at a time. To see more you need to view a members full profile and decided on either to message them, or tag them as a maybe for later, or remove the profile completely from your search (since it is not a good match).
When displaying your information about activities, groups, discussions, and members, Stitch uses helpful badges to make certain aspects more easily identifiable. For example, all Stitch members have a Status. This is based on a points system that calculates how active you are in the community. These Status badges are displayed predominantly next to the members profile photo and is an ideal indicator of the trust the Stitch community has with the member. It's these types of touches that makes Stitch as a dating service standout.
Stitch is free to join as a Public member. When verified, a Public member has access to most of Stitch features, so it is a good way to get the feel of the service and what it is about. You are limited to Public only activities and Groups though. If you wish to join other Groups or attend member events you will have to become a Full Member subscriber which costs from $5 to $15 depending on the plan type, and if you select the year long term.
If you are 50 or older and are looking for companionship and some fun activities, then check out Stitch to find other compatible members.

Stitch Profiles & Sign Up Process
Access to Stitch is available from their website at Stitch.net and from their apps for Android and iOS devices. The website itself is also responsive to different screen sizes which makes it a good option for mobile devices as well. Like other social networks and dating services though, your best option to access Stitch is to use a larger screen device like a laptop since there can be a lot of content on each page. To signup to the Stitch service head over to their website (or download the app) and click on the signup button to create a free membership. The following information is requested for new accounts:
- Sign Up and Public Account Creation
- Eligibility check which asks if you are over 50. You must be 50 years old or above to join Stitch
- Input your Email Address, First Name, Your Gender (Male or Female), and Location
- Profile Details
- Select what you are looking for (Friendship, or Friendship + Romance, or Romance)
- Select the genders you would like to meet for Friendship and/or Romance (each is a separate option)
- Share some of your Interests
- This helps Stitch to determine which members, groups, and activities to show you
- There are 100's of Interests to choose from and you must select a minimum of 5
- You can also create your own interests that automatically get added to the main list for other people to select (if approved by Stitch)
- Most members seem to have at least 10 Interests selected
- Examples of the wide range of interests include: Tennis, Card Games, Fishing, Classical Music, Ballet, Yoga, Movies, Travel, Art, Baseball, Museums, Learning an Instrument, etc...
- Choose your profile image
- Upload or take a photo from your device, or connect to Facebook and choose one from your account
- Please note that your Public account will only have limited functionality until you get your photos verified.
- About You (write a little bit about yourself, minimum 100 characters)
- Distance Preferences
- Set the distance Stitch uses to choose which activities & groups to tell you about
- Use the on-page slider to pick anywhere from 5 km to 200 km distance (defaults to 50 km). Distance on other parts of the service may also be refereed to in ranges of "Closest", to "Farthest"
- Invitation Code
- If somebody invited you to join Stitch, enter their invitation code This will let them know that you have joined and be able to welcome you to the community. Plus, they will earn some Reward Points!
- For your own Invitation code to give to your friends to use when they join Stitch, check out the "Invitations" option under the "More" menu option on the top menu bar
At this point you have finished creating your limited Public account. You can then check out the Community section of the service and read about the different activities, groups, and discussions other members have setup or started. If you wish to use the Members section to meet and message other members you will need to fill out the rest of your profile. This includes writing a bit more about yourself and the type of companions you are interested in meeting (not all questions are required to be answered):
- Questions About Yourself
- Depending on if you are looking for Friendship and/or Romance you may be required to answer 1 or both of the following questions:
- Write about the kind of Romantic companion you are looking for
- Write about the kind of friend you are looking for
- Talk about the things you care most about
- List three words your friends would use to describe you and why
- How do you like to spend your Saturdays?
- Write about the next place you would like to travel with someone to
- Talk about any classes you would like to take up
- Depending on if you are looking for Friendship and/or Romance you may be required to answer 1 or both of the following questions:
Once you are finished you will see how your profile ranks (out of 5 stars). The more profile questions you have filled out and the more photos you have the better your profile will be ranked. The higher your profile ranks the more you will be suggested to others in the Member section.
The last thing you need to do to improve your limited Public account is you need to verify your profile photos. This simple process will give you full Public access and allows you to initiate a conversation with another member.
Verification
Identity verification is becoming an important part of online dating and too few services do it beyond the basics these days (which would be just email and/or Facebook). Stitch is more than a dating service and has community hosted activities so verifying members are who they say they are, in their profile photos has been integrated right into the service. Unverified Public accounts (called limited Public accounts and are marked with a green "Limited" badge) can look around on Stitch but can do little until they actual verify their account. Until verified, Stitch will gentle remind you every so often that you need to get verified to get the most out of the service.
Account verification can happen in 2 ways on Stitch. The first is being verified in person by a Stitch Community Champion at an event. A Stitch Community Champion is a Stitch member who has hosting at least three Stitch event/activity in your area. You will recognize Stitch Community Champions by the purple "Community Champion" badge on their profile. When you meet one at an event (you can find out who is a Stitch Champion by looking at the list of attendees for an event), just ask them to verify you and they will help you out.
The second way to get verified (and the most popular option) is by visiting "Verification" from the "Profile & Settings" menu item under the "More" main menu found in the top right tool bar. From here you can get your profile photos verified by uploading a verification photo of you holding a piece of paper with your member verification code. This process takes less than a minute if done from your phone or laptop. Once complete Stitch will match your current uploaded images with the one you submitted with your verification code to confirm they are of the same person. This process usually takes less than 24 hours.
Once verified, among other features, you will be able to view Members profiles directly and message other public members.

Stitch Viewing & Communication Features
Stitch is broken down into several sections. The main sections include Community, Members, Messages, and More (which is for help, account settings, membership, etc...). Each of these sections. The Community and Members Section are further divided into sub section. You can access these sections whether you are using a phone or laptop via the top menu bar. Here is a list of some of the features of these sections as they relate to viewing and communication tools.
- Profile
- Member profiles are accessible by clicking on a member's photo when viewed in the Community Section (including groups, activities, and discussions), in the Members Sections, and Messages
- When viewing the full profile, you can see the members photos, First Name, Members Status, Photos, Interests, Location, About Me, and any other profile details the member has filled out
- If an Interest listed contains a yellow Star icon this indicates it is a shared interest with you
- At the bottom, the profile will also list any activities/events the member has been involved in setup by the Stitch Community. The name, location and date of the activity is listed. Clicking on the activity will bring up even more information
- A number of badges/icons can be displayed on a Members profile including:
- A Green Circle which indicates they are online
- A Purple Community Champion badge which shows they have held at least 3 events in their area
- A Community Supporter award badge shows the member has purchased one of the top membership levels
- A Green "Limited" badge shows that they are a Public member and have limited access. A darker green "Public" badge shows that the member has had their photos verified
- Clicking on a member's photo in their gallery will allow you to view it in full screen. You can tap on the left or right arrows to view the previous or next photo
- On the member profile page, you can also send the member a message. Verified Public members can send other public members a message and Full members can send any member a message
- Tap on the "..." More button for additional options to control if the member is shown to you at a later date in the Members section. Selecting the "Maybe later" option tells Stitch you may be interested later but remove the profile for now from the list. The "Remove permanently" option prevents the member from ever being suggested in the Members section again. Finally, the "Report" option will flag the member to be reviewed by the Stitch team to determine if the member has misbehaved or is a fake profile
- Messages
- Accessible by clicking on the Messages menu item in the top menu bar. A red icon with a number beside this menu item indicates how many new messages you have
- This is where you read and send messages to other members (including those from the Community and Messages section)
- Messages is split into 2 parts, your Inbox, and "All messages" (includes your sent messages). Messages can also be filtered to display as conversations when searching by first name
- Messages are listed latest first. Each message listed shows a photo of who it is from along with their First Name and any important badges they may have. The beginning of the message is shown along with the date it was sent. If the message has not been viewed yet it will be tagged as New
- Clicking on the message will bring up the full message along with options to archive the message, view the members profile, and blocking the member (which prevents them from seeing your profile and messaging you)
- When you receive a message, you will also be notified by email
- You can include emojis, GIFs, and image attachments in messages
- Status & Rewards
- Accessible from the More menu button on the top right of the menu bar. This page shows you not only your status level but how many membership/reward points you have
- When you make a positive contribution to the Stitch Community, you can earn membership points. You can earn membership points by getting a new member to join (from 1,200 to 5,000 points), organizing a Stitch Activity (500 points, plus 10 to 100 points for every member who attends), and paying for a membership (between 200 and 1,200 points)
- Status
- Status allows Stitch members to be recognized and appreciated for the contributions they make to the Stitch community. It also can be used as a trust metric for new members which tells them which members are highly trusted
- Achieve higher status levels the more Membership Points you earn within a 12-month period
- Once you reach a status level your 12-month period resets, so you have an additional 12 months to either retain your current status or upgrade to a higher status
- Membership Points required to reach each status within a 12-month period are: Bronze (1,000), Silver (3,000), Gold (6,000), Platinum (9,000), Diamond (9,000)
- Rewards
- Reward points track the total number of Membership Points you have earned being a member of Stitch. They do not expire. These points can be used to give you Stitch Rewards as way for the Stitch community to say thanks to their major contributors
- Reward points can only be redeemed after 3 months from when they were earned. Before this they will be shown under Pending Reward Points
- Please note that Stitch rewards are just tokens of appreciation. For example, when you reach 12,000 Reward points you can either extend your Community membership for free or give another Stitch member a Community membership
- Community
- Accessible by clicking on the Community menu item in the top menu bar on the far left
- This section is a large part of what Stitch is about, bringing people together who share similar interests in member-driven events (in-person and virtual), online groups, and online discussions. While this does not relate directly to finding dates (unless the event, group, or discussion is about singles) it is a good place to meet new people who share your passions. Plus, you never know, something could eventually lead to romance
- Remember, most of these events, groups, and discussions are created by, and run by members. For those members who organize and run the different community events and groups a number of tools are available to assist you in managing your event or group. For the most part we will not be covering these tools in this review. Please refer to Stitch's excellent Help section for more information on managing events and maintaining your community groups
- The Community section is organized by:
- Activities & Events
- This section lists activities and events near your location. The list can be filtered by search keywords and sorted by the actual date of the event, or the created date of the event
- Clicking on your location allows you to change not only the acceptable distance from the activity but your location as well. You can also change the list to show All Activities, Past Activities, or Activities in My Groups only
- Popular Activities include:
- Single Mingles, Meet & Greets, Fitness, Happy Hours, Book Clubs, Friendship Get Togethers, Hobby Related, Music, Movies, Performances, Dinners, Museums, etc...
- Events are listed in up to a 4 column layout (depends on size of your screen) similar to the Members section. A photo is included with the event listing along with the name of the event, date of the event (or suggested date), number of attendees, number of comments, and information about the member who is hosting it. Event listings also include easy to read badges tagging if the event is New, Full, Virtual, or the type of Stitch member it is for
- Clicking on an Event/Activity brings up the detail page:
- This page includes a description of the event which describes what it is about, who it is for, and if any costs are required. The location and address of the event is included (unless it is virtual) along with the number of people who can attend (and if the event is full), and the date and start time
- The Stitch members who are attending are listed as well. The first attendee listed is the member who organized the event. You can click on the members photo to view their full profile
- Events can be tagged with interest keywords
- Events can be shared on Facebook and email invites can be sent to your friends
- If you wish to go to the event or participate in the activity you tap the "Attend" button. If something comes up and you cannot make it, just tap the "Unattend" button. Most organizers of the events will take attendance to ensure your profile reflects properly which events you actually went to
- Members can leave comments about upcoming events making suggestions or asking questions. Other members and the community event organizer can reply to these comments
- Comments are moderated and can be reported to the Stitch team
- If an event is over, you can request to the organizer to do the event again
- Suggest an Activity
- Full members can create an activity. Event types include: Regular (for Full and Public members who can only attend up to 3 of these), Public (for any member), and Full Members Only
- Events can be in-person or virtual. Virtual events use the Stitch Group Video Chat feature which does not require you to download any additional software. You can also specify to use Zoom, Skype, Google Meet or Microsoft Team instead if you wish
- Stitch Video Chat currently supports up to 50 attendees, but only 12 people will be seen on screen at any one time. It also supports live chat and screen sharing
- Stitch Groups
- Groups are designed for members to create an online community around a particular interest
- When you visit the Groups section of the Community page it will list Groups near your location. The list can be filtered by search keywords and sorted by Activity, Distance, Size, and Created date
- Clicking on your location displayed in the Group list allows you to change not only the acceptable distance for the Group but your location as well
- Popular Groups (among many) include:
- Widows & Widowers, The Daily Gratitude Check In, Lonely Hearts Club, and Musicians and Fans of Music
- Groups are listed in up to a 4 column layout similar to the Activities section. A photo is included with the group listing along with the name of the Group, who is the current organizer of the Group (can be more than 1 person), the location the Group is for, number of members, and number of comments
- Clicking on a Group brings up the detail page:
- This page includes the Group name along with a summary of what the Group is about. Following this is a list of the members who help organize the group and then a list of tabs for the various parts of the Group including Members, Activities, and Discussions. You then find a more detailed description of what the Group is about
- The Stitch members who belong to the Group are listed as well. Clicking on their photo will take you to their full profile
- If any Activities are upcoming, they will be listed on the Group homepage as well
- Groups can be tagged with interest keywords
- Within a Group, members can join/unjoin the Group, post comments, create a discussion topic, and organize an activity
- Members can leave comments making suggestions or ask a question about the Group. Members of the Group can also reply to comments
- A Stitch video chat room can also be setup for the Group. This allows Group members to meet each other virtually and discuss things related to the Group. Only organizers can open a room (max 50 members can join the room at once)
- Create a Group
- Full members can create a Group. Group types include: Public (any verified member can join, only Community Manager can create), Regular (for Full members only), Private (for invited members only)
- Stitch Discussions
- Lists current trending Discussions by columns in a layout similar to Activities and Members. To filter the Discussion, click on the "All Discussion" heading to select either All, those that have comments, those that you are Following, and those that are attached to your Groups. You can also search for specific keywords. Discussions can be sorted by trending and most recent
- Clicking on a Discussion brings up its conversation page:
- At the top of the page is the main Discussion topic followed by the number of comments and views the Discussion has. Popular conversations can have thousands of comments. Then if you wish you can join in on the conversation and enter your own comment. Following this are everyone's actual comments. Comments can be sorted by date
- To join in on the conversation you can add your own comment (or reply to another comment). When your comment is posted you automatically follow the Discussion
- Comments can be rated positively or negatively which is an indication of how many people agree with you
- Discussions can be followed which means you will be notified of any new comments
- Post a Discussion
- To Post a Discussion you must belong to a Stitch Group as a Discussion must belong to a Group
- Activities & Events
Searching and Matching
Stitch is broken up into two main parts which include the Community and Members sections. The Community section is where you will find a list of local events and activities with groups and discussions you can join. The Community section is ideal for those interested in finding new friends that share similar interests. If you are interested in romance and dating, then you will be using the Members Section a lot more since this is designed to help you connect one-on-one with other members, where you browse and view profiles.
Searching
The main way to find members interested in dating is by visiting the Members Section. The Members Section has 3 tabs at the top which includes Profiles, History and Settings. The Profiles tab lists suggested members near your, the History tab shows a history of members you have interacted with (including filters for those you have Messaged, those you have listed as "Maybe", and "Removed"), and the Settings tab allows you to change the preferences for the types of members you are looking for.
When you view the Profiles tab the members are listed in a gallery format. Depending on the device you are using to access Stitch this can be up to 4 columns wide. Each member displayed shows their main profile picture along with their first name. The distance from you is listed along with the type of relationship they are looking for. If a red heart is displayed then the person is interested in romance, and if a blue group icon is displayed then that person is interested in friendship (someone can be both interested in romance and friendship). The number of interests the members have are also shown along with their membership status (Diamond, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Limited). If you see a light blue lightning bolt icon this indicates you share a number of matching interests with that member. There is also an indication if the member is a Community Champion and if they tend to be responsive to messages. Finally, if there is a green circle icon next to their profile photo then that indicates if they are online.
Clicking on a member will then take you to their full profile where you can further read about them and decide if you would like to send them a message or tap on Skip to remove them from your Profiles list.
The members suggested to you is based on the preferences you originally setup when you created your profile. These preferences are based on your location, distance from your location, the type of relationships you want (friendship and/or romance), and gender. These settings can easily be changed from this section either under the Settings tab at the top or by tapping the Change button. When displaying members Stitch also considers how new the member is, and how many shared interests you may have. You are only shown 20 members at a time in the Profiles list. There are many more profiles than this, but in order to see new ones you must message, skip, or remove one of the profiles. The results can also be sorted by Suggested, Newest, and Closest.
On the Members page near the top right you can also search for members by different interests without modifying your existing preferences. This way if certain interests are more important to you, you can return a list of members who specifically have selected those (instead of the number of interests shared), and still have the results returned based on your other existing preferences.
Another way to find members for friendship and possible romance is to view members of the different Groups, Activities, and Discussions under the Community Section. If you find a community that greatly intrigues you, chances are, there are members also attending/participating that may be interested in romance. Attending an activity both people are interested in is a good way to help build a relationship.
Matching
Stitch does not have the traditional dating service automated matching algorithm that relies on matching preferences and personality tests. It is a community focused on events and activities to help build friendships and allow people to find romance through the sharing of interests.
Other Stitch Information
Stitch Connect, Inc. was founded in March of 2014 by founder and CEO Andrew Dowling. By July of that same year Stitch.net was launched. It is headquartered in Sydney, Australia and serves most English-speaking countries. In March of 2020 Stitch announced via their blog that they are now a not-for-profit charity recognized by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) for the impact the community has on improving the lives of members, and on the volunteering work Stitch members do. Once enough funds have been raised Stitch plans to establish charitable entities in the United States and other locations. More information about the Stitch charity can be found at wipeoutloneliness.org.
Additional information on this social connections and dating service can be found in our topic for Stitch news articles.
Stitch Customer Support
Stitch has a full featured FAQ and Help Center. In fact, it is probably the most detailed support system we have seen from a dating service. Links to both can be found in the footer of all web pages. The FAQ addresses basic general inquires about the service while the Help Center (found under "Support" in the footer of the website) contains more in-depth information articles that are designed to be easy to read and includes images explaining the different features and aspects of the service and how to use them.
If you need additional help (technical issues, billing, or anything else) then Customer Service can be emailed directly at support@stitch.net.
- Emailed Directly
- Available 24 Hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Response times is between 24 and 48 hours
