As of May 3, 2017, went through a complete redesign of the look and features of the service (see Story). If you are looking for a dating service similar to what Chemistry use to offer, you might want to consider eHarmony. Another option would be Chemistry's sister site Match.

Below, we have left our original review for your continued reading (the homepage image below has changed to reflect the latest design). The review received its last major update on August 18, 2014. was designed from the ground up to help singles who are serious about finding meaningful relationships meet their matches. Though it was built by the creators of, Chemistry stands out as a unique dating service thanks to a matchmaking system based on science and compatibility.

Just what makes this site so innovative? That would be Dr. Helen Fisher, an American anthropologist and human behavior researcher who has studied romantic attraction for over 30 years. In addition to her work as a professor at Rutgers University, Dr. Fisher was hired by Match to build and create the site’s game-changing hormone-based and personality-based matching systems. The Chemistry matching system is designed to get to know you on a deeper personal level, using Dr. Fisher’s latest research to move beyond the profile to the real person behind it.

From this site’s point of view, meaningful relationships are built on two equally important foundations:compatibility and chemistry. Most dating sites are concerned only with assessing compatibility, but Chemistry's matchmaking system is designed to help you find both of these elements. From the moment you join the site, it’s easy to see that unprecedented levels of time and effort went into designing a dating system that works on both levels.

It’s all evident in Chemistry's profile creation process. New users can create a profile for free, though they won’t be able to communicate with other members. After filling out basic user information like name, email address, and zip code, the real fun begins. Chemistry’s four-part questionnaire kicks off with a “My Personality” section, which mixes traditional multiple choice questions with questions that use images (like choosing which drawing looks most like your doodling style, or which hand looks most like your right hand).

Three more sections follow:“About Me,” “About My Match,” and “In My Own Words.” The first covers standard information about appearance and lifestyle, including eye color, height, body type, religion, profession, and education. “About My Match” takes on the same topics as “About Me,” but asks you to use them to describe who you’re looking for. The final segment, “In My Own Words,” contains a profile headline and a 200-2000 character free response “Tell Us About Yourself” section.

Once your profile is complete, you’re taken to a clean, minimal, and easy-to-navigate homepage. Your matches, chosen by the site, are front and center. They can be sorted by date, photos, activity, age, and personality type, and can be responded to by hitting one of three buttons – “I’m interested, “Decide later,” or “Not really.” New matches will be received once action has been taken on current matches.

One of the more unique aspects of the profile is The Stream, a log of your matches’ recent activity that updates in real time. When you see something that catches your eye, you can send a wink for free to let someone know you’re interested. To be seen in the stream, update your profile, add a photo, or respond to a Stream question when it appears (note:you must have an approved primary photo to appear in the Stream).

Another feature that sets Chemistry apart is the personality types. Each member is assigned one of four personality types – Explorer, Director, Negotiator, Builder – based on their responses to the matching questionnaire. Chemistry describes the four types like this:

  • Explorers: spontaneous, creative, open-minded
  • Directors: decisive, focused, independent
  • Negotiators: imaginative, empathetic, nurturing
  • Builders: social, loyal, dependable

As a member you receive a detailed breakdown of your personality type, how you relate to others, and what type is most compatible with you. Matches on your homepage are labeled based on their personality types, and a more detailed explanation of how your primary and secondary personality types match-up is available when you click on a profile.

To get the ball rolling, Chemistry offers Chemistry Starters, fun activities designed to break the ice and help you get to know your matches. The Starters are:

  • Fortune Cookie:Crack open a fortune cookie. Describe how it applies to your life and compare with your match.
  • 5-Card Sort:How do the two of you stack up? Select a category and then sort the cards.
  • Love it or leave it:View an image and decide whether you love it or if you could just leave it.
  • Relationship Essentials:Are you and your match seeking the same characteristics in a potential partner?

Curious about Chemistry? Over 8,000,000 people have taken the free personality test. Why not be one of them?

Positives of Chemistry
