Hinge Dating’s New Ad Campaign Kills off its Mascot

Hinge dating app has another campaign around its tagline “designed to be deleted,” where mascot Hingie journeys to the afterlife after matching a happy new couple.

According to Adweek, marketing agency Wieden + Kennedy Portland created the ad campaign for Hinge, including a video which expands on the designed to be deleted theme.

The video is meant to appeal to younger daters with its slightly dark yet funny approach. It begins with a couple kissing in their car who decide to make their relationship official by deleting the app, sending Hingie into the afterlife. The ad continues with Hingie’s journey, where the mascot is dropped in front of a judge called The Oracle, who grants Hingie’s passage to heaven through a golden doorway.

Grinder and Athena Co-Founders

Grindr has hired the two founders of Athena, a fitness community app, to join its team.

According to Axios, the gay dating app company hired Athena co-founder and CEO AJ Wolf as a senior manager of product finance, while co-founder and technology chief Max Roche is joining as a senior iOS engineer.

Axios noted that Grindr did not acquire any of Athena’s assets.

There is not much detail about the hirings, but Grindr has been looking into areas outside of dating to build community on its platform. One area Grindr CEO George Arison has focused on is travel. The company recently released a feature called Teleport to allow users to set their location to a place they plan to travel so they can connect with others before they arrive. Tinder has a similar feature called Passport.

Bumble CEO Lidiane Jones sat down with Tech Crunch to discuss women on the platform no longer making the first move, potential new safety features, AI, and other plans to enhance the app.

In a recent interview Jones shared that she is reconsidering the basic premise of Bumble: that women make the first move. Instead, she said that women should be given the choice of whether they want to make the first move or not, giving them more control in their dating experience.

Jones assured Tech Crunch that her goal of empowering women on the platform remains steadfast: “Our brand awareness is so high, it’s amazing. And if you ask anybody about Bumble, they’ll say it’s about women, and the core of that is not changing. We are a company that really cares about women’s empowerment.”

Grindr’s CEO George Arrison is planning to monetize the app more aggressively, including launching an AI chatbot and putting previously free features behind a paywall.

News website Platformer broke the news about Grindr’s plans to launch an AI-based “boyfriend” chatbot feature that can engage in sexually explicit conversations with users, for a price. Some employees have expressed weariness, as the AI-generated conversations could be based in part on private chats between other human users, pending their consent.

Platformer also learned that Grindr is revising its terms of service to ask people signing up if the company can train their AI models on their personal data, which can include direct messages. This is likely to be a privacy issue going forward for other dating apps who could pursue employing user data to train AI.

Lily James Set to Star in Film Inspired by Life of Bumble Founder Whitney Wolfe Herd

Actress Lily James will reportedly star in a film inspired by the life of Whitney Wolfe Herd, the legendary founder of dating app Bumble.

According to Deadline who broke the story, the film won’t be strictly based on Herd’s life, but the former CEO’s struggles and triumphs are meant to inspire the script. James will produce the film alongside 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment, the production company formed by Jennifer Gibgot and Andrew Panay, according to Deadline. They are currently in pre-production for the untitled film, which is expected to be released in 2025.

Wolfe Herd got her start in the dating app business as a co-founder of Tinder, and then famously left the app in 2014 amid allegations that she was sexually harassed by her former boyfriend and Tinder co-founder. She went on to found Bumble that same year, and made it her mission to give women power on the platform, ensuring that they are the ones who can reach out first to a match.

BLK dating app has unveiled Spring Mode to help foster more connection among college students during their spring break vacations, when many are traveling and looking to meet people.

According to Blavity, the feature allows college students to place a fun badge on their profiles of the place they plan to visit over their spring break, in case other potential matches might be traveling there, too. Destinations include Hawaii, Cancun, Jamaica, Los Angeles, Cabo, the Dominican Republic, Cancun, Las Vegas, and Miami among other prime locations.

The badges all have unique personality and style, and are modeled after the famous places they represent. The vision behind Spring Mode according to Jonathan Kirkland, BLK’s head of marketing and brand, is in line with the company’s overall commitment to fostering connection and community as well as inclusivity.
