Tinder UK Ad for Gen Z

Tinder has launched a new branded ad in the UK, aimed at a younger generation of daters that are turning to the app to expand their social circles as well as to find love.

The new ad debuted on Boxing Day in the UK according to The Drum, and stars a young woman named Ava who just moved to London. She calls her sister to express her loneliness, and wonders if she made the right decision in moving. Her sister suggests getting out of the house and meeting some people, and so her new life in London takes off with the help of Tinder.

She begins dating, but it doesn’t go exactly as she’d hoped. Her first date challenges her values of working hard and striving by admitting that he doesn’t find ambition “that attractive.” Then she meets Maya for a date, and while the two discover that they aren’t really attracted to each other, they turn out to be great friends. She goes on more dates, none of whom really spark romantic love interest, but offer her a wider social circle and new possibilities for meeting someone special as they introduce her to their friends.

Hinge says AI is Future of Dating

The founder of Hinge, the fastest-growing app in parent company Match Group’s portfolio, says AI will change the game for dating apps.

McLeod spoke to the Financial Times about a range of topics, including Hinge’s success and where he sees it going, and the advances with generative AI. He noted that the key with AI and dating apps is continually “dialing up the sophistication of our matching algorithms” so that it continues learning about the nuances of preferences and delivering better results, according to The Financial Times.

“Every single time someone goes on a great date, we can look at all the information that led up to it, “ McLeod told the Times. “Everything from their profile information to their behavior on the app, to how many matches they had at the time that they met.”

Hinge is launching a million-dollar social impact fund called One More Hour to help encourage people to meet in real life in response to the loneliness epidemic. The fund will offer $10,000 to $25,000 grants to 501(c)3 groups in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York to develop “fresh, free/low-cost and recurring in-person connection opportunities” for young adults, according to Fast Company.

The idea is to get people engaging more with each other in real life and not just online. The program is intended to fund events that will be organized and ongoing, so that people will feel more encouraged to show up and see what happens.

Hinge’s social impact director Josh Penny told Fast Company that social clubs stand out as a way to combat the loneliness epidemic because of “their welcoming, low-pressure nature.” He adds that telling people to hang out in person doesn’t necessarily work, that you need to offer the structure and support to encourage people to do it.

Dating app Grindr has announced a strategic partnership with Ex-human to add an AI assistant to its platform.

According to Decrypt, Ex-human is a bit different from the familiar AI tools we’ve seen, which focus on answering fact-based questions. Instead, Ex-human is designed to engage in “emotionally resonant and meaningful conversations” according to Decrypt.

In fact, the AI model offers virtual companions like imaginary geishas and popular figures like Elon Musk. The companions are designed to show expressions and reactions to different prompts, so the user feels more engaged with the bot.

Epic Games, maker of popular game Fortnite, just won an antitrust lawsuit against Google for its Play Store practices. This outcome could be a gamechanger for app developers, who must rely on Google and Apple stores to get their apps out in the world.

According to Tech Crunch, a San Francisco court found that Google “willfully acquired or maintained monopoly power by engaging in anticompetitive conduct” as stated in the court filings. The jury determined Google’s liability, but a judge still has to decide what the final outcome will be.

The two companies will plead their cases in January to argue for how Google will need to adjust its Play Store policies going forward. Currently, the company takes a commission of as much as 30 percent of all purchases made via apps on its platform. The original lawsuit included Match Group among other companies, but all of them settled out of court apart from Epic Games.

Dating app Tinder has released its new dating trends report for 2023, and one of the main findings of the Year in Swipe point to singles wanting a range of dating experiences, rather than being so focused on finding “the one.”

In other words, more singles were interested in their own dating journeys rather than the destination, with Tinder noting that there was a 5.5 times increase in users adding statements in their bios like: “Everything I do is for the plot.” NATO dating was also a big phrase – “not being attached to an outcome.”

Singles also said they embraced “main character energy” in 2023, alluding to stories they can share about their dating lives with their friends (and followers on social media). They said they looked at the dating process as a way of building a roster of new experiences and memories (to add to their personal stories), which took the pressure off outcomes. It also left room for “self-exploration through dating,” according to Match Group’s release.
