The Internet has brought us many wonderful things, but honesty isn't always one of them.
I'm not just talking about Craigslist scammers or the secretly married folks trawling online dating sites - in some cases, it's the businesses themselves that are less than forthcoming about their practices or efficacy.
A business that doesn't always tell the truth? Say it ain't so!
Sorry, boys and girls - CBSMarketeWatch.com says it is so. They counted down a list of 10 things online dating sites won't tell you, and we followed along. 5 down, 5 more to go:
- This place is a hotbed of adulterers. Pretty sure this surprises no one. Most sites aren't out there to promote infidelity (thought the ones that are, like Ashley Madison, have become famous for it), but it happens frequently anyway. Still, opinion varies on whether affairs are on the rise because of online dating, or whether online dating makes it easier for cheaters to get caught, or whether online dating is completely unrelated to infidelity.
- Don't judge a person by their photo. Remember the good old days when using an old picture was the only photographic lie perpetuated on dating sites? Now there's Photoshop, apps like Instagram, and plenty of other programs that make editing and adding filters easy. You never really know who you're actually looking at.
- Keep a close eye on your wallet. Yes, singles are prime targets for con artists. Consumers lost $50 million to romance scams in 2011, says the Internet Crime Complaint Center, with the average victim getting taken for nearly $9,000. It's a problem for dating sites across the board, and circumstances are unlikely to change any time soon.
- Objectification: It's what's for dinner. No critic is harsher than an online dater. The minute we log on, we click through photo after photo, mercilessly rejecting anyone who doesn't match up to our standards of beauty. The words on the profile are all but forgotten (there's text on those things?). Mobile dating apps like Grindr are making this problem even more apparent, though on-the-go dating seems to be a huge hit anyway.
- Endless love - or endless chat? Plenty of online daters are in it for love, but some are in it just to spectate. They browse, they chat, they pick out a few profiles that tickle their fancy, but they never take steps to make things more serious.
