Chemistry History Summary was launched in 2006 by InterActiveCorp and was considered a sister site of Chemistry was designed to compete with eHarmony and the success they were having with their detailed matching algorithm. IAC heavily promoted Chemistry's matching algorithm which was designed in part by Dr. Hellen Fisher who is a anthropologist and human behavior researcher.

In 2008 Chemistry had spent over $12 million in advertising and by 2009 Chemistry had 4 million members since it launched. By 2013, over 8 million people worldwide had taken the Chemistry Personality Test. Since then though failed to capitalize on dating apps and with heavy competition in the dating industry suffered from declining traffic. In 2017 the original website and matching algorithm was dropped. People Media (which is owned by Match Group) has taken over the brand and replaced the website with a simplified version.

Both the original website and the current one uses a paid subscription service to generate revenue. Users can create a free membership and profile. They can receive matches and search but they must purchase a subscription before they can communicate with anyone else on the service.
