Tinder Renews Swipe Night Series for Season 2

Tinder Swipe Night Season 2

Tinder announced that its hit interactive series Swipe Night has been greenlit for season two. The new season is expected to debut this summer, according to The Verge.

Swipe Night season one premiered last year in October in the U.S., and will be released internationally in March. The series consisted of five-minute episodes available once per week (Sunday evenings throughout the month) via the Tinder app. As users watched, they were presented with choices of what to do in real time, which informed how the story unfolded for them, described as a “choose-your-own-adventure” format.

The choices viewers made also populated their user profiles, so other Tinder users could see how they chose and make decisions as to whether or not to swipe right or message them.

Swipe Night centers around the apocalypse, where partygoers find out that an asteroid is headed toward earth and they have three hours to live. The overriding question of the series is: how would you spend the last few hours you have left? (Hint: the options aren’t so much morbid as entertaining.)

Swipe Night really connected with younger Gen Z daters, according to Tinder. The company added 437,000 subscribers in that quarter, or 5.7 million average subscribers overall in Q3 of 2019. Matches in late October also jumped 30 percent compared to an average Sunday night, and messages increased 12 percent, according to Tech Crunch. There was also a 20 percent increase in likes, and female engagement went up after the series launched.  

“Entertainment has always been a human connector,” Tinder CEO Elie Seidman told The Verge. “We had a theory that our members would find this completely new and innovative experience natural to their Tinder experience — and they did. We couldn’t be more thrilled to bring a new season of Swipe Night to Tinder this summer and give our members another opportunity to form connections and start conversations.”

Karena Evans, who has directed numerous music videos for artists like Drake and Coldplay, directed the first season and will be brought back to direct season two. Two new writers were hired for the second season: Jessica Stickles whose credits include Portlandia and Another Period, and Julie Sharbutt (3 Days).

“Working on Swipe Night was such a fulfilling experience for me…I’m in search of projects that impact, shift or curate a culture and couldn’t be more excited to return for more,” Evans said in a statement.
