This month, Tinder launches the second season of its wildly popular in-app interactive series Swipe Night. The premise is a murder mystery, and participants are expected to guess who did it each week as the clues are revealed.
The first season brought in over 20 million viewers worldwide for a choose-your-own-adventure style story, where viewers selected what they would do along the way, which led them to different outcomes. This time, according to Tech Crunch, users will watch the same mystery unfold, but they will be able to search rooms and examine objects for clues to draw their own conclusions.
The series is live on the app from 6pm EST to 12:00am beginning Sunday, November 7th, and Tinder will continue to air new episodes each Sunday at the same time through November 21st, according to the company’s website.
At the end of each episode, users will be prompted to choose a suspect they think committed the murder, and the app’s algorithm will match them with another viewer who aligns with their profile preferences, but who picked a different suspect. They can chat live to discuss their findings without having to match first. At the end of the chat, they can choose whether they’d like to keep messaging.
After the series concludes, users will be able to watch again at any time, unlike the first season. Swipe Night can be found in the app’s new Explore section, along with other features like Hot Takes for virtual speed dating.
The first season of Swipe Night launched in the U.S. and debuted in other markets much later, but this time, the series will premiere in 25 markets worldwide. The series is geared towards Gen Z users, offering an all Gen Z cast and directed by award-winning indie filmmaker Sasie Sealy. Tinder has been focused on this demographic as it has debuted more entertainment-based offerings.
“Demographically, we’re seeing Gen Z engage with these kinds of interactive, fun ways to meet new people features a lot more,” Tinder VP of Product Kyle Miller told Tech Crunch. “This is one of the big reasons why we built ‘Explore’ — we wanted Tinder to feel alive, experiential and immersive…Injecting that kind of fun and novelty, but also substance, I think is what we’re finding Gen Z is really latching on to.”
Tech Crunch noted that after the first season, Tinder shared there was a 26 percent increase in matches. The company also found that “true crime” was a hot subject among users, with an increase in mentions of it in user bios up 20 percent in the past year.
