Tinder and Lyft Partner

Tinder has partnered with ride sharing company Lyft to let users purchase rides for their dates, encouraging people to meet for dates after more than a year of lockdown restrictions from Covid-19.

The new feature can be found in the company’s Explore section of the app, where a user can buy a ride credit for a person they have matched with, according to The Verge. While the person buying the ride credit can set the meeting location, time, and how much they want to spend, they won’t be able to see their match’s address or other personal information.

If you are the recipient of a rideshare gift, you have the option to turn it down. When someone has purchased a Lyft ride for a match, the match is sent a link via a phone number or email address, and it is up to that recipient to accept or reject the ride. The Verge points out that while this is a good step in enacting some safety precautions for users and giving them some control, there should also be a way to opt out of the feature altogether. (Currently, there’s not.)

And if you’re the one gifting the ride, it’s not a financial loss if your match turns it down. You will get a refund if they don’t use the ride credit, or if they only use part of it. And your date can’t just use the ride for another purpose and go somewhere else, it has to be within a half mile of the location you set for the date.

According to The Verge, both sender and recipient need to have Lyft accounts to be able to use the feature, so if you don’t have one and are gifted a ride, you will have to create one. The purchaser can choose either round-trip or one-way rides.

Tinder has rolled out a slew of new features lately, including launching its own in-app currency so people can purchase premium features while they are tooling around the app. The company also launched Tinder Explore, a dedicated section of the app that more closely resembles a social media feed, where people can search profiles by interest and chat with anyone, whether they are a match or not. Explore also has entertainment-related content like the app’s limited series Swipe Night (which premieres its second season in November), and Hot Takes, a virtual speed dating experience.

The new Lyft ride feature is available now via your Tinder account.
