If you’re looking to improve your dating options, you might want to register to vote, at least if you’re an OkCupid user.
The famously provocative dating app conducted a study among its users and found that they tend to be more politically engaged, and therefore want their dates to be too, especially during an important election year in the U.S. A whopping seventy-six percent surveyed said that how their dates lean politically is important. OkCupid users consider voting a very important practice – and over 500,000 of its users said they wouldn’t consider dating someone who didn’t vote.
Ninety-one percent of women and 89% of men surveyed said they are registered to vote. In fact, the study found that registered voters on OkCupid are 85% more likely to get a message than non-registered voters, which is one of the reasons OkCupid now offers a voting badge feature to attach to your profile for easy identification. Registered voters are also 63% more likely to get a match.
OkCupid users also want change. They were two times more likely to be hopeful about the candidates running in the upcoming election than to be excited about four more years of Trump. Across all age groups, a majority of respondents said they would vote Democrat, as opposed to being undecided, unwilling to cast a vote, or voting for Trump.
OkCupid also broke down their data state by state, asking respondents how they feel about important issues like prison reform, separating immigrant families at the border, climate change, and gun control laws – as well as whether they would vote Democrat or Republican.
Overall, OkCupid users tend to skew Democratic and have a more progressive view of politics. Even in swing states, which tend to be evenly divided between registered Republicans and Democrats, there were definite Democratic leanings.
For example, 92% of respondents in Wisconsin said they were in favor of prison reform, 96% said that families shouldn’t be separated at the U.S. border, 78% are concerned about climate change, and 66% say the U.S. needs stricter gun control laws. Texas and Michigan were equally concerned about these issues, with 91% and 93% respectively favoring prison reform, 96% agreeing that immigrant families shouldn’t be separated, and even 57% and 64% respectively saying they were in favor of stricter gun control laws.
When broken down by demographics, 83% of Gen Z users said they were registered to vote, compared to 90% of millennials, 93% of Gen X, and 95% of Baby Boomers.
The registered voters surveyed also agreed that compassion is a sign of strength, find intelligence sexier than looks, are more open with their feelings and enjoy discussing politics.
The survey was conducted among U.S. OkCupid users. For more on this dating service you can read our OkCupid review.
