Dating app Hinge is targeting Gen Z daters with new video and polling features which are popular tools on social media apps.
Video Prompts and Prompt Polls help users strike up conversations in a more organic and playful way. Gen Z daters are looking for something more engaging than swiping, so Hinge and other dating apps are turning to game-like and video features to entertain and draw them in.
A video feature already exists in the Hinge app, but with Video Prompts, users are limited to recording within the app instead of posting something from their camera rolls, making for a more spontaneous and less polished introduction. Hinge says that this “encourages a filterless and authentic interaction between users,” according to Tech Crunch.
Hinge users can find the new features when they go to “edit profile” where they will have options to click on Video Prompt or Prompt Poll. When one of these is added, it will display on the user’s profile under the main photo. Users can only add one Video Prompt and one Prompt Poll to their profiles, however, though other profile features remain the same, including posting photos and videos and written prompts.
The sixteen video prompts include conversation starters like “something that’s special to me,” “hi from me and my pet,” and “quick story time.” Users can then record a 30-second video in response to the prompt.
Prompt Polls are a type of ice breaker to get to know matches better, modeled after polling features on social media. You can select from twenty-one prompts offered by Hinge, according to Tech Crunch, and once the prompt is selected, you can type three answers for other users to choose from. For example, Hinge posted an image with the prompt “Instead of grabbing drinks, let’s…” and then a user can fill in whatever they want, and be as specific or vague as possible.
Other prompts include: “If we won the lottery, let’s spend it on…” and “Two truths and a lie…”
Tech Crunch reported that Bumble began testing a polling feature as well this fall, even though Hinge is the first to offer them for all users to publish.
“With the launch of Video Prompts, we’re continuing to minimize the guesswork daters sometimes experience, so our community feels confident about the person they’re going to meet,” Michelle Parsons, chief product officer at Hinge, told TechCrunch about the news.
The new features are now available worldwide for all users.
