Dating app Hinge is looking for a new head of AI, and is willing to pay almost $400K to the right person who will lead the team.
AI has become increasingly important to dating apps, and Match Group CEO Bernard Kim is capitalizing on the versatile technology to expand product offerings, especially for star app Tinder. Now, he’s focusing efforts on AI for its fastest-growing dating app, Hinge.
According to Business Insider, the new position was created to confirm Hinge as an “AI-first company.” The VP of Artificial Intelligence will lead a team of data scientists and machine learning engineers “to create and deploy AI features across the app,” as reported by Business Insider. The new hire will be based in New York, and report to Ben Celebicic, Hinge’s Chief Technology Officer.
The job listing states that the new AI executive will be responsible for growing the app’s AI “in an ethical way” in regard to personal data privacy and algorithm bias, which have both been ongoing issues on dating platforms. Part of the new role will be collaborating with the engineering, data and product teams to form a more cohesive and safe strategy with AI, and as the job description states: "lay the foundation of AI at Hinge to power user safety, bad actors/algorithms, recommendation engine, AI-generated interactions, etc.”
The executive team is also looking for someone who understands generative AI tools (like the popular ChatGPT), but also will be able to explain them to “non-technical stakeholders.”
Kim has been focused on AI tools across all of Match Group’s app, specifically aiming sights on Tinder. In fact, the company announced the coming launch of its new VIP product (for those willing to pay as much as $500 per month). The new subscription tier will be a more curated experience, driven not by humans but by generative AI.
The company is also developing photo selection features using AI, which would scan the user’s photos in their phone and choose which one best represents their personality for their dating profile. It will also explain why it’s recommending a particular photo. The feature is currently being tested.
Kim feels AI is the future – both in attracting younger people to its apps and in creating a better matchmaking experience. Match Group also announced that it will be adding other AI-driven features like prompts and quizzes to help users engage on its apps. Dating app users are already using ChatGPT to help write their profiles and messages.
The new hire will earn between $332,000 to $398,000 per year, depending on experience.
