On International Women’s Day, Tinder announced the launch of Her New Dating Rule Book, a guide to challenging dating norms and traditions for singles in India.

According to Mashable India, the new guide offers new “rules” for dating today, including who should foot the bill on a first date. Traditionally, it’s been the man, but Tinder says that dating dynamics are changing, and young women in India embrace a more progressive, less traditional approach.

One of the first rules of the guidebook states: “Respect Over Outdated Gender Roles, a.k.a. Chivalry 2.0,” to highlight the fact that young singles are looking for mutual respect and dates who keep promises over outdated notions of chivalry, like expecting a man to pay for a meal. And 36 percent surveyed said they value dates who give their full attention and put the phone away on the date.

In fact, a recent survey the company conducted among its Indian users showed that 38 percent of female users are seeking new experiences rather than the traditional dinner or drinks dates, and 29 percent desire less pressure around pursuing a “happily ever after.”

Female Tinder users consider safety on dating apps a top priority, according to Rule #2. Over half surveyed said they would unmatch with someone who sends inappropriate messages, according to Mashable. They like the features that employ AI to filter messages – “Are You Sure?” before sending a message or “Does This Bother You?” regarding potentially inappropriate messages received.

Forty-four percent of women want to see verified profiles, and 53 percent said they want to see clear profile photos. Fifty percent said they like to receive check-in messages from a date after the fact, and consider this a sign of respect.

Dr. Chandni Tugnait, Relationship Expert for Tinder in India, said in a statement about the guidebook: “Modern dating is about rewriting the rulebook. It's no longer just about old-fashioned gestures, but about genuine respect and real connections. Women today prioritize mutual care over outdated norms, embracing relationships that truly resonate.”

Dr. Tugnait went on to say: “Let’s celebrate this new era where every connection is built on the freedom to choose what feels right and safe.”

Aditi Shorewal, Communications Lead for Tinder in India, said: “This International Women’s Day, we are excited to spotlight how women are reshaping the dating landscape in India, defining modern chivalry through respect, genuine effort, and the freedom to choose what feels right.”
