2017 ‘Singles In America’ Survey Reveals Secrets Of Millennial Dating

Match.com has released its seventh annual Singles in America study, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive annual survey of dating in the United States.

The 2017 survey is set to reveal surprising data and trends on new dating rituals, the impact of social media on the dating landscape, shifting gender roles, and attitudes about love, sex, and relationships across generations.

Unsurprisingly, Millennials were a major focus of the study. The much talked-about generation is “diligently using technology to find love,” says Dr. Helen Fisher, biological anthropologist and Chief Scientific Advisor to Match, “and building new dating rules and taboos along the way.”

For starters, they’re super into online dating. Almost one in six singles (15%) say they feel addicted to the process of looking for a date, and Millennials are 125% more likely to say they feel addicted to dating than older generations.

They’re also more open to casual relationships. One in three singles have had sex before a first date, and single millennials are 48% more likely to have had sex before a first date than all other generations. Some may see a physical relationship as a fast track to an emotional relationship, while others may use sex as a kind of ‘interview’ before committing further energy to a potential date.

Millennials also had a few surprises up their sleeves. Although they’re happy to do the deed before a date, it’s not all about sex. Single millennials are 51% more likely than Boomers to have no interest in sex, and when they do knock boots, they take it seriously.

Twenty-eight percent view sex as a way to decide if they love someone or not. Millennials are also 40% more likely than other singles to believe that an emotional connection makes sex better, as well as the least likely generation to have cheated on a partner.

Despite their admitted addiction to online dating, 22% of Millennials say they think technology has made finding love more difficult and 57% say they’re lonely. In other words, they’re not just date-obsessed - they’re love-obsessed.

Millennials are 30% more likely than any other generation to want a relationship this year. Perhaps it's finally time to let go of stereotypes about their fear of commitment.

The good news for Millennials is, their dedication to online dating is working. They’re 30% more likely than other generations to have a first date that leads to a second date. Now if only they weren’t also 177% percent more likely to feel an overwhelming pressure to get married…
