Japanese Government funding Public Dating Service

Singles in Japan have the government on their side when it comes to finding a mate. The country’s Cabinet Office is asking for budget approval for a new dating service that is driven by artificial intelligence.

According to CNet, Japan currently has government-run matchmaking, so it’s not a new idea. About 25 of Japan’s 47 prefectures offer state-run services similar to an online dating app, where people complete basic profile information and are given a list of people who match their criteria. However, introducing AI could change the game with more targeted matchmaking abilities.

Now that COVID-19 has created a surge of activity and interest in dating apps, many singles around the world are turning to them to find love. In light of this, Japanese officials have an eye on AI to drive better, more curated matches, with their goal being to help people start families.

The new AI dating platforms are expected to offer more specific questions focused on personal values and interests in a range of topics, which means users would have to share more than the typical government-run services. CNet notes that this includes whether or not they are fans of Pokemon (since the matched couple can also book a Pikachu-themed wedding).

These more in-depth and nuanced answers coupled with AI do seem to drive better matchmaking. Other apps are already using AI, including OkCupid and Tinder. OkCupid uses machine learning as part of their matching algorithm and for building community on its platform, with users getting prompts to answer questions and engage with others on politics, values, and other topics to gauge compatibility. Tinder uses AI to verify photos and filter offensive content.

The Japanese government would pay for two-thirds of the cost of launching and operating the new AI-based platform. The Cabinet Office is requesting budget approval of two billion yen (or about $19.05 million) for the new service.

Japan’s birthrates and marriage rates have been declining in recent years, which is why the government is looking for new ways to encourage people to start families. The number of annual marriages in the country fell to 600,000 in 2019, down from about 800,000 in 2000.

In fact, Japan has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, with not enough babies to replace an aging population. The country has the highest percentage of people over 65 of any country in the world, according to Singularity Hub. This shift is due to many factors, one of which is the rising number of women putting their careers over raising a family.

The new service is expected to launch this spring.
