Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of dating app Hinge, has delved further into the mechanics of finding people their perfect match: this time, by launching a new dating lab.

Hinge differentiates itself from dating app Tinder, also one of Match Group’s dating apps - namely by helping people get off the app and into relationships. (Tinder on the other hand is always looking for app stickiness, recently by launching its own interactive series Swipe Night to attract younger users.) McLeod’s philosophy is different: he doesn’t use social media himself, and while he wants to provide a way for people to meet via his app, he also wants them to put their phones down and engage face-to-face.

Tinder's Interactive Series Swipe Night

Tinder’s hit interactive series Swipe Night proved to be a wildly successful marketing strategy. As a result, the popular dating app will be debuting the series internationally in February 2020.

According to The Daily Dot, Tinder users have been “flooding” social media during and after the game (which can be seen from 6pm – midnight every Sunday), comparing their choices and discussing what happened. Tinder has also revealed that they’ve seen a “significant uptick” in user engagement since the series debuted. CNN Business reported that total matches on the app rose 26 percent on Sunday nights. Messages between users also rose 12 percent.

As a result, Tinder decided to take the series worldwide. It debuted in the U.S.

Dating app Tinder introduced its new interactive series Swipe Night in early October, hoping to attract young users with compelling content. As it turns out, it may also help lagging user engagement, and give users a reason to stay on the app.

Tinder is parent company Match Group’s star app, and the company has seen incredible growth in both users and revenue. Tinder’s active daily users grew 3.1 percent year-over-year for Android users, from 1.114 million to 1.149 million according to data from SimilarWeb, and installs grew 1 percent.

The word “transparency” gets thrown around frequently. We ask for transparency from governments, we ask for transparency from companies, we ask for transparency from our communities. On a personal level, transparency means openness, communication and accountability - being your true self and building relationships based on trust and authenticity.

Needless to say, online dating does not always live up to these high ideals. Photos are staged and edited to conceal perceived flaws. Profiles are carefully crafted to attract potential suitors. The problem of people creating false identities online to lure unsuspecting lovers is so prevalent that we’ve given it a name - catfishing - and an MTV show. It’s no wonder modern singles are so skeptical of each other.

The new series will be a “choose your own adventure” story available to users when they log into the app. It’s interactive content, so users are able to swipe left and right to continue to different versions of the story. The basic premise involves the apocalypse, and asks the question: “Who would you spend your last night alive with?”

Russia’s largest social media platform VKontakte is going head-to-head with Tinder and Badoo by launching its own dating app.

According to The Moscow Times, VKontakte’s Lovina is a video-centric dating app, offering a video chat option to people who like each other over the app and a “carousel” of short videos for a quick communication between random users who are browsing through the app. Executives behind Lovina say that providing video as the main way for users to connect is a better method than what traditional dating apps like Tinder offer, because video is much more revealing than photos or a written profile. Plus, there’s less chance of someone faking a video compared to photos.
