The Chicago Tribune has a story about some of the research going on to find out how attraction works between people, both gay and straight. The author takes a look at 4 aspects of this. These aspects are DNA matching with the online dating site ScientificMatch.com (see our other story on them), how physical attraction and evolution works, if there is a love hormone and finally, how your brain effects love.

More and more dating sites are pushing how they have the science and research behind their match system. eHarmony, Chemistry and Perfectmatch are the big 3 who promote their matching system and the science along with their relationship experts. All of these sites post a summary review of how their matching systems work as quoted by the experts. None as of yet (that I am aware of) have actually gone in great details on how their system works and made the research public to back it up. We also need peer reviews of these matching systems from an independent source to begin to fully trust these matching systems. We talked about this in a story we previously did where Chemistry may be one of the first sites to start actually doing this.

New Ads

As per this recent story, Chemistry.com to Spend $40M on TV Ads, it looks like Chemistry.com new TV ads called "Chemistry Vows" will be coming to a TV near you. The four new commercials will appear on the NBC network along with Bravo, HGTV, TBS and A&E. After viewing the commercials and seeing the list of networks the commercials will be aired on, Chemistry is definitely targeting the 30 and older crowd. This makes sense since Chemistry is all about the long term relationship, something that most 20 to 29 year olds are not looking for yet, either do to school or job advancement, etc.

New Feature

To improve members experience with online dating, Chemistry has added the feature "You've Been Noticed". This feature allows members to find out who has viewed their profile. According to Chemistry:

How did the Popular Dating Services do in February?

The same article as mentioned in our previous post also had some traffic details for February (the busiest month for the dating industry) on some of the more popular online dating sites. First of all, traffic in general for dating services fell 5 percent, when compared to last year. For the most part this decreased is blamed on the social networking sites MySpace and Facebook.

According to comScore Match.com came out on top in February with 3.9 million unique visitors. Yahoo! Personals was second, followed by Singlesnet.com and then eHarmony with 2.8 million (a 30% increase over last February). In February, 2007 eHarmony had 1.8 million unique visitors.

For the most part the major dating sites had similar or increased traffic this February when compared to last. I think the dating sites that took the hit, traffic wise where probably the smaller niche dating sites. The social networking sites with their interest groups makes finding people with a specific interest easier sometimes.

You may have noticed Singlesnet.com is in the top 5 most visited dating sites and that we do not have a review of them. I haven't done a review because, when I initially looked at them a couple of years ago I had a few issues with there site. There where also a few too many negative user comments about them. I should check out Singlesnet.com again and see if anything has changed.

Expect to see more television commercials for Chemistry.com mid April. There will be 4 different ads and the campaign will be mostly seen on cable stations like Bravo, TNT and the Food Network.

Last year Chemistry.com spent $21 million on television commercials which helped grow the sites traffic by over 70 percent in February (when compared to the last year). Chemistry had over 500,000 unique visitors last month. In total they have 4.2 million registered members.

I've decided to do a little more research of my own on the Better Business Bureau in regards to dating sites. This was after seeing an article about rising complaints (see Increased Complaints Registered Against Dating Services).

First a bit more on how the BBB works. To do a BBB search on a company visit their home page. The best way I found to find dating sites was to type in the domain name without the www prefix. Just a note here, most free or small dating sites are not found on the BBB. Once you have initiated a search, a list of companies may then come up. Some have nothing to do with what you are looking for while others may deal with separate branches or offices of the company. As an example, do a search on "yahoo.com" and you will get 22 results. Another thing to remember (which I didn't realize at first) is a company doesn't have to be a member to have a report on them. Actual BBB members are denoted with an icon and usually contain a lot more information than companies that are not members. When you click on the name of the company it will bring you to the report page of the company on the local Better Business Bureau website. These local BBB websites are not all the same and some have a lot more information available than others. All the information I am giving below seems to be how most of the BBB websites display their information. Some BBB sites like the one serving Los Angeles displays the information differently. They grade the company and actually shows some or all of the customers complaints. This seems to be an update to the service and may be how other BBB sites will soon follow.

Who is Thomas Enraght-Moony? He is the boss of Match.com and he did an interview earlier this week at the Times Online UK. The article for the most part reviews with Thomas, his previous work experience and what makes him the man to drive Match.com forward. They also of course, discuss Match.com. Most of the stuff talked about in regards to the dating service we have already heard and has been mentioned on this site in previous posts (not necessarily from Match.com though). There where a few interesting things mentioned as well as a few confirmation of stats for this year in regards to Match.com.

As of now it looks like Match.com current core of members continue to be between the age of 28 and 45, with an almost 50, 50 split between men and woman. The over 50 segment is the fastest growing as with most other dating sites.

One thing I didn't know about was Match.com UK recently made a deal to run dating sites for The Sun and News of the World, 2 very large news papers in the UK. Not much more information has been released but this will certainly open doors for Match.com and help bring in the younger crowd.

They also talked about a few differences of some of Match.com dating sites in other countries. These are in response in part to cultural differences. For instance, in French woman can use the site for completely free, while in Germany Match.com Male members can pay for a woman subscriber's membership. In Japan apparently members want blood type and income verification.
