Luvr Dating App

Dating apps aren’t afraid to embrace trends. Love bacon? Or beards? Or Canadians? There’s an app for that. Dozens of niche services capitalize on the latest news and pop culture obsessions, yet there’s one trend online dating has strangely skipped over: video.

Though Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat put video front-and-center, the majority of big-name dating apps don’t allow users to share or upload videos. Attempts to integrate video, or launch new apps that are video-focused, have largely failed.

Does video dating belong to the ‘80s, when singles would record personal profiles on VHS in hopes of being distributed to a compatible match?

Luvr, a new video-based mobile dating application, hopes it can bring video profiles into the 21st century.

Luvr combines video-centric features from popular social apps to create a familiar, yet unique, digital matchmaking experience. The app offers a three-tiered communication model: pre-recorded video bios and pictures, Snapchat-esque video clips, and video chat within the app.

"One of the great things about video is that it allows you to pick up on subtle nuances about a person's personality, their mannerisms, their sense of humor, and other traits that tell you much more about who that person is and what they're actually like versus a static photo that might be several years old and not an accurate representation of who that person is today," said Luvr CEO Oliver Buckley.

Truthfulness is a priority for Luvr. The app uses an official timestamp feature that shows when a video or photo was taken to ensure all content is up-to-date. This also helps eliminate the catfishing problem.

Other aspects of Luvr are more familiar to regular dating app users. The right/left swipe functionality is there, but Luvr adds a second layer to create a “Double Swipe Verification System.” Swipe left to pass on a match. Swipe right once to learn more information about someone. Swipe right again to say yes.

Luvr’s search functionality is also familiar. Users can filter their results by sexual preference, body type, race, and ethnicity, with plans to add religious preferences in the future. Alternatively, users may simply browse matches aggregated by the app’s location-based technology.

When asked about what he saw as the future of online dating, Buckley said, "More and more, people are taking advantage of video as a go-to medium when it comes to interacting with their social groups. Whether that's on Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp, you name it. With Luvr, we're simply applying that capability to the mobile dating scene to give people the added benefits it delivers over the limitations of today's photo-only alternatives."
