Cosmic Love, a new astrology-based dating reality series launched by Amazon Studios, has become a hit among young Gen Z daters. Instead of experts doing the matchmaking, the show leaves it to the contestants’ birth charts.
The premise is already popular – more than a third of Gen Z singles use astrology to decide who they date. Dating app Bumble announced it is rolling out astrology-based features for its platform based on its own user surveys.
According to website Her Campus, the new series was developed in part by celebrity astrologists the Astrotwins, also known as Tali & Ophira Edut, the official astrologers for Elle magazine and who co-founded an entire astrology-inspired brand called Astrostyle (which includes a series of astrology-based novels). They wanted to extend their brand to television, and despite being Gen Xers themselves, have drawn young Gen Z viewers.
The show stars four singles – a Leo, a Capricorn, a Gemini and a Pisces, chosen from each of the four signs of fire, air, earth and water – who are matched with sixteen singles (over the course of the series) whose birth charts are across the astrological spectrum to see who is the best fit. The show’s host is an “Astrochamber” which looks like a crystal ball and is voiced by Cree Summer, with help from the Astrotwins.
True to their signs, Capricorn contestant Maria Rodriguez is hard-working and “too busy for a relationship” as she’s managing multiple businesses. Phoebe Davis is a fiery Leo and a tenacious fitness competitor and model who wants to help empower women. Connor Shennan is a Gemini and wildland firefighter who loves music and being outdoors. And the last contestant, Pisces Noel Allen, is a personal trainer and coach, and also a romantic.
The four contestants get to meet and date each of the singles brought to the show, but according to Her Campus some singles were cast because they might be a perfect astrological match, while others were chosen as a kind of distraction – the contestants’ usual “type” – to see if matching birth charts were more successful than just attraction.
The show premiered August 12th and almost immediately scenes went viral on TikTok, drawing an even bigger audience to become a bit of a cult hit in just a week.
The show is attracting viewers but the question still remains – do astrology signs really help make better love matches, especially for those who want a long-term relationship? Or is there more to love than just having the stars aligned?
