Exploring your options and being “consciously single” top the list of dating attitudes going into 2022, according to a new study by dating app Bumble.
The company conducted a survey of its members to find out where they stand on dating compared to before the pandemic began, and to identify new trends and practices as we head into the high season for dating app users. The first Sunday after New Year’s has typically been the busiest day for dating apps, and Bumble expects this year to be no different. Rival dating app Tinder also expects Sunday January 2nd to be the busiest day for online dating in 2022, specifically between the hours of 7pm and 10pm.
Yahoo! News noted the highest volume of messages sent over dating apps in the US are typically exchanged from the first Sunday in January and throughout the month, tapering off before Valentine’s Day.
Shan Boodram, Sex and Relationship Expert at Bumble, outlined the study’s main findings in a brief video that was shared by Yahoo! News, and advised singles on some new trends and tips as they enter the New Year.
Boodram’s first topic of discussion was “Explori-Dating,” a term to describe people whose approach to dating is considered more “exploratory,” meaning that they are more open to matches who might have different interests or live in another city. In other words, daters are being more open-minded instead of filtering down their matches as they would have before the pandemic. The company said that nearly half (48 percent) question what their “type” is, and more than one-third are more open to “exploring” a relationship with someone who lives in another city.
More than half of respondents (53 percent) said they are “consciously single,” or that they have made the choice to be single and look for someone who is going to “add to my life,” according to Boodram’s video, and not just settle for anyone.
Interestingly, she points out in the study that people’s attitudes towards drinking have changed since the pandemic began, and roughly 34 percent said they were likely to consider going on a “dry date” instead of meeting for drinks as they would have before the pandemic.
Boodram also provided some tips for strengthening your profile to get you ready for the busy season – and that includes adding your interest badges, really beefing up your profile (adding more, not revealing less!), and asking a trusted friend for advice and tips on how they might describe you for inspiration. She also suggested a new picture showing your smile, your eyes, and your face without any Snapchat filters to make a good first impression.
