I was surprised when I learned that 80 percent of members at the dating site Mate1.com have never been married and have remained single. On the flip side this means on average at Mate1, 19% of men and 21% of women have been divorced. When you look at the data by country Ireland comes out on top at 94 percent for men and 91 percent for women who have never been married. Let's look at the data for other Countries:

  • United States - 76% of men and women have never been married.
  • Canada - 86% of men and 79% of women have never tied the knot.
  • United Kingdom - 88% of men and 80% of women.

One other thing that I did find interesting was for all countries, there was always a higher percentage of men who were never married than women. Also, since Mate1 has such a high percentage of members who have never been married this seems to suggest that Mate1 members are more likely to be in their twenties and thirties.

Christiancafe.com is a Canadian success story. Eleven years ago today (February 26, 1999) they officially launched. Since then the dating service has successfully matched Christian singles in the United States, Canada and around the world.

One of the best things about this Christian owned and operated dating site is, it offers singles a ten day free trial which gives you almost full access to the service. You can search, view profiles and pictures, and email other members. You can do this all without giving your credit card. Most dating sites offer a free trial but put limits on the trial (like no emailing) which can make the free membership almost useless.

It looks like the rumor was true (see Story), Match.com released a press release yesterday which confirm that they have made a deal to acquire the dating site Singlesnet.com. Financial terms of the deal have yet to be released but Match CEO Greg Blatt did state that Singlesnet will continue to be run largely as a standalone business. Adrian Ong of Match.com will be taking over the helm from the previous owner of Singlesnet, Quinn Lipin. Mr Lipin will still continue to work for Singlesnet.com as an executive.

Singlesnet was once the most visited dating site in the USA back in December 2008. Since then traffic has slowly declined with a major drop happening in February 2009 from 7 million unique visitors to just under 5 million.

OkCupid and Web Traffic Numbers

I found an article which talks about the trouble with web traffic numbers. I have talked about this issue before but it is interesting to see it from the point for view of a large dating site like OkCupid. In January comScore reported that OKCupid had 735,000 unique visitors in January, 2010. This was an increase of about 200,000 from a year ago according to comScore. Sam Yagan, OKCupid chief executive stated that:

... comScore was significantly undercounting the site’s traffic.

For proof he gave the author of the article, Carl Bialik a Google Analytics report for OkCupid which showed almost 4.3 million unique visitors last month. This shows that comScore's estimate is off by 600 percent. All I can say is I am not surprised. Web traffic estimates from these types of traffic sites are usually way off the mark. For example our review site is vastly under estimated as well, in most cases over 4 times as much. The other statistic in which Sam Yagan mentioned was that during a normal day in February (Feb 18th I believe) they had 270,000 unique logins to their dating site. With almost a couple hundred thousand people logging in during a 24 hour period, this makes comScore's estimate of 735,000 unique visitors in a month seem laughably low.

Match.com UK IPSOS Study - A Match is made every 10 mins

In October of 2009, uk.Match.com (which is now owned by Meetic) released the results of a study. They had commissioned a major online research company, IPSOS, to find out how often someone finds a match on their dating site. IPSOS concluded that on Match.com in the United Kingdom, someone finds a match on average every 10 minutes.

One question I asked right away is what do they consider a match? According to Match.com, a match happens when someone finds a partner on the site and cancels their subscription. This definition sounds fine to me.

Now let's look at how IPSOS figure out the result. A random selection of 1,000 former Match.com members was surveyed online during October, 2009 from the 5th to the 21st. These participants were from the ages, 25 to 60 years old and had cancelled a subscription to Match.com sometime between October 2008 and September 2009. 17 percent of these 1,000 people had stated the reason for leaving was because they had found someone on the dating site. Given that 344,681 people had cancelled their subscriptions on Match.com between October 2008 and September 2009, this means 58,595 people had found their partner on Match.com during last year. This equals to 4,883 per month, 160 per day, 6.7 per hour and 0.112 per minute. From this data you can then calculate that just over 1 match is formed on average every 10 minutes on Match.com in the United Kingdom.

While I find the statistic in which uk.Match.com is promoting of 1 match every 10 minutes interesting, I find the statistic of 17 percent even more interesting. According to the IPSOS study, Match.com in the UK has a success rate of 17 percent. This means 17 out of 100 paid members found love on Match.com. I would have thought this number would be higher. It would be interesting to see some comparison studies on other dating sites and matchmaking services to see how Match.com stacks up. I also wonder what percentages of people meet the love of their life through bars, friends, family, or work. Do dating sites give you a better chance or is it just a tool to use when you have exhausted your other potential matching options?

Online Dating Goes to Twitter

If you were lucky enough to be in Canada mid-month, you might have shimmied off to attend one of the first-ever Flitter events - an online/offline approach to dating that integrates Twitter and a mixer event.

Just prior to Valentine's Day, residents of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver who were single and looking came together at on of these Flitter events, created by Justin Parfitt. He's the CEO and founder of Canadian-based dating service Fastlife and was intrigued with the possibility of mixing technology and real-life interaction with groups of people. The events were initially introduced through Fastlife to the Australian singles community and are now off and running in Canada.

If you happened to be a single, Canadian Twitter user and were open to something new, this might have been just the thing for a lonely digital heart!

Event participants signed each tweet for the evening with the term "flitterme," which then generated a search stream that was displayed on a large screen in the room. Everyone was given a name tag number on the way in and people could choose to either sign their tweets with their number or remain anonymous.

Events organized over Twitter that lead to in-person interaction are nothing new. "Tweetups" are hosting in many cities across the United States, bringing together people who digitally know one another and adding the "real life" factor into the equation. It seems that this is yet another niche when it comes to the online dating scene, allowing single Twitter fans to flirt, learn and explore in an accepting setting with a group of other singles who enjoy the same technology they do. Common interests are a well-known key to successful relationships - perhaps Twitter is the common ground of the future? Grab your Blackberry or iPhone and find out! Nothing makes you smile like a little online flirting.
