Are you a plus size dater looking for a new and better online dating experience? WooPlus aims to create a friendlier, more enjoyable time for daters who are sick of apps and online dating sites geared towards people with leaner bodies, and are looking for a more accepting environment.
Niche dating sites are a huge part of online dating. While Tinder serves the general dating market, some sites and apps prefer to focus on a certain segment of the market with particular tastes – whether it’s dating people who have the same political beliefs, eating habits, or religious views, for instance. Some dating sites even cater to hobbies, lifestyles and preferences like Star Trek fans, farmers, tattoo lovers, or those who prefer to date redheads.
In fact, there are several niche dating sites and apps that cater to physical appearances and preferences – specifically body types, like plus size men and women. The problem? Many of these sites attract daters with fetishes, without any type of filter for those members who just want acceptance for their bodies, as a reporter from Mashable pointed out in a recent article.
This makes online dating culture all the more precarious for curvy daters. Many plus size online daters have experienced rude messages and fat shaming on mainstream apps like Tinder and OkCupid, and therefore look for a niche site that is more accepting of different body types. But often what they encounter with niche sites are messages from users who fetishize them – objectifying their bodies instead of looking for real relationships.
WooPlus is striving to be a different. The app has filters that search for terms that are often used by those with fetishes, to help weed them out. Also, they encourage users to report bad behavior.
So far, members of Woo Plus have been reportedly more respectful and kind to other users, and most seem to be looking for relationships, friendships, and some degree of hooking up, as with normal dating sites.
And while the format is similar to Tinder (more swiping), users can only see a few matches per day, depending on how many friends they invite (the more friends, the more matches). Also, each user has only 48 hours to message someone after “liking” them, or they disappear from your match list. It cuts down on those just liking for the sake of matching.
The company tells Mashable there are over 25,000 users with 2,000 new signups every day. 61 percent of users are male, 39 percent are women, even though the app is primarily targeted to female users.
