You sign up for a dating app’s premium trial, explore the extra features, then get busy with everyday life. Before you remember to check your membership, another payment arrives. New UK subscription rules planned for January 2027 aim to give you more warning and a simpler way to leave.
For people paying for dating services such as Tinder, Bumble or Hinge, the changes could make managing a membership less frustrating. The focus is on clearer prices, renewal reminders and cancellation routes that are easier to follow.
The measures sit within the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. With the detailed regulations still going through the legislative process, January 2027 is the planned start date. Subscribers should also check whether their particular contract falls within the new regime.
What Will Change for Dating App Subscribers?
The government’s announcement on tackling subscription traps says UK consumers spend an estimated £1.6 billion annually on subscriptions they do not want. That figure covers subscriptions generally, rather than dating services alone, but the problem will sound familiar to anyone who has forgotten about a paid membership.
For subscriptions covered by the new rules, the main changes include:
- Clearer information before you pay: Businesses will need to explain the subscription’s costs, renewal arrangements and cancellation rights.
- Reminders at key moments: Notices will help subscribers spot when a trial is ending or a longer membership is about to renew.
- Easier online cancellation: If you can subscribe online, you must be able to end the subscription online without unnecessary obstacles.
- Another opportunity to reconsider: A new 14-day cooling-off period will apply after qualifying renewals, including the end of free or discounted trials and renewals for 12 months or longer.
That final protection needs a little care. It does not mean every monthly payment will trigger a fresh 14-day cancellation window. The type of renewal and the terms of the contract matter.
Will Cancelling Mean a Full Refund?
A cooling-off right gives you an opportunity to cancel, but it does not always mean every penny comes back. Depending on the circumstances and applicable conditions, a business may be entitled to retain a proportionate amount for what it has already supplied.
That creates practical questions for dating memberships, which can combine ongoing access with features used soon after purchase. Someone might explore premium tools immediately, then decide the membership is not right for them.
The Online Dating and Discovery Association has asked for clearer guidance on how refunds should work for dating subscriptions and how these offerings should be classified. Until those details are clear, avoid assuming that using premium features and then cancelling will automatically produce a full refund.
