Spending on Dates Study

The average American spends over $120,000 over his or her lifetime on dating, according to a new study. Not surprisingly, seventy percent of daters think that dating is too expensive.

Online banking company Simple.com partnered with OnePoll to survey 2,000 Americans about their expenses when it comes to dating and found on average it costs people $168.17 per month. According to Fox News, they also discovered that dating expenses actually increase once the couple gets married – on average to $185.65 per month - because they want to do things to “keep the spark alive,” according to the report.

Nearly one quarter of the respondents said the reason they don’t date is because they don’t feel they have enough money and they aren’t comfortable with their current life situation — including their financial situation. In fact, 51 percent said they’ve cancelled a date when they were unexpectedly strapped for cash. Still, 28 percent said they would go into debt in order to keep dating.

Interestingly, the majority – 62 percent – claimed their financial situation holds them back from having a “more robust” dating life, according to Fox News. Almost half of respondents said it’s cheaper to be single because when you’re out on a date with someone new or your partner, you tend to argue over who pays the check. (Sixty-six percent of men said they pick up the tab, while 42 percent of women said they offer to pay the full bill on the first date, and 25 percent of women offer to split the check).

“Discussing who will pay the check can be one of the first times a date or new couple navigates a financial decision,” said Steph Reiley, Director of Product Management for Simple.com.

Some respondents said they get creative when it comes to paying for a date, including phoning a friend to borrow some cash, pretending they’ve lost their wallet, or even selling expensive personal items like a watch.

Still, money seems to be a stressful topic when it comes to dating, especially in the beginning of a relationship. Most feel they need to spend money to impress their dates. However, 37 percent feel that after five dates, they relax and don’t feel they have to spend so much. Thirty-six percent of respondents said they relax about spending after they’ve had sex with their dates, and thirty-five percent said it’s after the first kiss.

One of the most popular dating activities is what you’d expect – dinner and drinks – according to three out of five respondents who said that is their go-to dating activity.

Respondents tended to feel stretched when it comes to spending money on dating, but overall, they are still interested in pursuing love despite the costs.
