Dating app Grindr announced the launch of its new video series Play Safe, intended to educate dating app users about its safety policies and practices. The videos will be available in the app as well as across the company’s social channels.

According to the company’s press release, the safety features the dating app will be highlighting include the ability to mute, block and report bad actors on the app. Grindr says its team of “human moderators who have been trained on LGBTQ-specific cultural sensitivities and gender-inclusive content moderation” will be reviewing all reports around the clock.

“We work day-in and day-out to make Grindr a place where our users can feel safe and supported, because we know that the world at large is not always accepting of the LGBTQ community,” said Alice Hunsberger, VP of Customer Experience at Grindr.

Grindr is also encouraging people to use its audio and video chatting features before agreeing to meet someone in person. This is to avoid catfishing, a problem that’s rampant on dating apps.

The company’s moderation team, which they say operates with more than 99 percent accuracy and conducts “frequent internal audits to ensure that moderation decisions are as fair and accurate as possible,” is also a focus of the video campaign.

Play Safe was written and directed by Alex Stergiou and Patrick Rogers, and features a predominantly LGBTQ-identifying cast and crew, including members of Grindr’s Customer Experience team and RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Kandy Muse, who plays a new hire at Grindr. She’ll be highlighting customer service misconceptions versus what the team is actually doing for app users. Grindr’s intention with the videos is to make questions about safety issues more engaging and accessible for users, and to show them the tools the app offers to make their dating experience better.

“The behind-the-scenes work of Grindr’s amazing Customer Experience team deserves to be recognized,” said Alex Black, Director of Marketing at Grindr. “We partnered with Kandy Muse to get the word out about some of Grindr’s most useful safety features and to make the topic of safety more approachable and engaging for our users.”

Grindr is no stranger to content creation – the app announced the launch of its new TV show Bridesman, which follows a gay bridesman as he undermines his best friend’s wedding. Last year the app debuted the Pride Preservers, a 30-day in-app content Festival, and brought Halloween to users with its virtual Fright Now Fest during the pandemic.

Grindr has over 11 million active users worldwide, and is one of the most well-known dating apps catering to the LGBTQ+ community. The company plans to go public before the end of the year.

According to the press release, this is the first installment of videos with more to come.
