Garbo and Match Partnership

Match Group is bringing the free background checks feature on Tinder to two more of its dating apps: Match (its signature app) and Stir, an app geared toward single parents.

The feature allows users two free background checks on matches, and after that there’s a cost. Right now, premium users on Tinder get four free background checks, and the same will apply for users of Stir and Match, according to The Verge.

The background checks feature was implemented in partnership with security service Garbo which actually runs the background checks. According to The Verge, when a user is chatting with someone and suggests meeting, a box pops up to ask if they want to do a background check. If they tap on the link, they see some safety tips before being transferred to the Garbo platform where the report is accessed.

Apple has come to an agreement with Dutch regulators over an ongoing dispute over dating apps being able to use third party payment systems.

After weeks of being fined for non-compliance, the tech giant has finally reached an accord with the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). According to Tech Crunch, the details are still vague, but the agreement basically follows the original proposal Apple submitted with a few significant changes, such as not requiring dating apps to create a separate binary app for third party payment systems.

Apple confirmed that they might do one of the following as it pertains to the agreement, which doesn’t make clear what developers can expect going forward. The tech giant said that dating apps might: continue to use Apple’s in-app purchase system; use a third-party payment system in the app that people can choose; include an in-app link directing users to the developer’s website to complete a purchase; or lastly, use a third-party payment system within the app and include a link directing people to the developer’s website to complete a purchase, according to Tech Crunch.

Match Group has sued Alphabet Inc.’s Google to avoid being kicked out of its Play Store. The dating app conglomerate has refused to pay the required 30 percent commission of its in-app sales to the tech giant. Match joined with other companies like Epic Games in fighting Google, citing its hold on app developers to prevent them from using third party payment systems.

Google said they will block downloads of Match’s dating apps starting June 1st if they don’t comply with Google’s contract and payment system and share the revenue from in-app sales, according to Reuters. Apple is fighting similar issues with Match Group in The Netherlands, where Dutch regulators have required Apple to allow third party payment platforms for dating apps. Apple has allowed third party providers but so far has not compromised on their commission, charging app developers 27 percent even if they use a third-party payment platform and not Apple’s.

"These exorbitant 'fees' force developers to charge users more for their services and utilize resources they would otherwise invest in our employees, technologies, and user-requested features," Match Group said when it announced its lawsuit. "In addition, monopolizing the market for in-app payments will further cement Google's near-total control of the Android ecosystem."

Spark Dating App Logo

Alex Hofman, a tech investor and former president of Musical.ly (which later became TikTok), has launched a new dating app called Spark.

Spark employs some traditional dating app features with a twist, and with some extra safety precautions. According to Tech Crunch, when a user logs in, they are presented with a grid of potential matches who are on the app at the same time. If the user sees someone they are interested in, they can like the photo – and if there is a mutual like, they can start chatting, but they only have 24 hours to respond or the match goes away.

Tech Crunch pointed out that while there is no swiping like in traditional dating apps, it has a mixture of similar features. Grindr for example, presents users with a grid of multiple people, but they don’t have to match before being able to message each other which leads to a lot of unwanted communication. Bumble puts a 24-hour time limit on matches to encourage them to communicate more quickly.

Apple has extended a new proposal to Dutch regulators, who have continued to fine the company for non-compliance with its order.

The tech giant submitted a new offer to the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) pertaining to the regulator’s order to allow dating apps to use third-party payment systems instead of forcing them to use the Apple Store, according to Tech Crunch. The ACM acknowledged receiving Apple’s proposal but shared no details publicly.

“We will now assess the substance of these proposals,” ACM said in a statement, according to Tech Crunch. “In that context, we will also sit down with various market participants. Our aim is to complete this assessment as soon as possible.”
