After getting your dose of Saturday Night Live, you can turn in for a new twist on the matchmaking game. The show “Match Off” pits two matchmaking experts against one another, with each episode featuring one dating contestant. The experts will offer advice to fix a love life that has yet to result in a perfect match. The catch? If they’re successful (or if ONE of them is successful), the week’s dating contestant will be poised to find love.

You see, only ONE of the two dating/matchmaking experts will be awarded the Scepter of Love at the end of each week’s show.

Here’s the jist: each week, a lovelorn contestant (they’ll be both male and female) will be paired-up with two matchmaking experts. Some featured experts for upcoming shows are folks like Emily Fry of In Good Company, Jen Moeller of Eight at Eight, Rachel Canis and Adam Fendelman (both of Best Foot Forward) and PJ Osgood of It’s Just Lunch. The race is then on for the two competing matchmakers to find the contestant Mr. or Mrs. Right! The matchmaker deemed to have given the best advice by the contestant wins the Scepter of Love.

Find someone love, win a stick. That, and get your matchmaking service pimped on network television, I guess. I’m interested to see how the series pans-out. While I don’t think true love can be found in a half hour reality show, it will definitely have its train wrecks and shocker moments. For the love-seeking’s sake, I hope these matchmakers are more spot-on than off and actually help them make adjustments that will compliment their dating lives for the long-term and not just for the sake of ratings.

The Game Show Network has a new dating TV show called Baggage and it is hosted by none other than Jerry Springer. The show first aired on April 19 and runs weeknights at 6:30pm / 5:30pm central time. Perfectmatch.com is a featured partner of the GSN and will be featured on the show as well. So what is the half hour show Baggage about? It involves 3 contestants and one dater. Jerry Springer coaxes the dater to choose among the others who should reveal their hidden flaws, what people would consider relationship baggage and what most would keep hidden well into a relationship.

Here is Jerry explaining in his own words what his new show is all about:

Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy of Dancing with the Stars officially called off their engagement last weekend. The couple became an item during a season of the show in 2008 and became engaged 6 months later during New Year's Eve, in Las Vegas.

Funny how this news comes about 2 weeks before the premiere of the new season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC. I call that good timing!

Anyways, in this season of the show, Karina will be partnered with Aaron Carter and Maksim with Debi Mazar.

It seems like we have had an influx of dating TV shows lately. Let's see what America has been watching.

There is the The Newlywed Game which we have blogged a bit about. It is sponsored by the popular dating site eHarmony (see Story). While not a dating show, it does deal with relationships.

One of the more popular dating shows and the number one TV show on Monday nights is, The Bachelorette. It just had the season finale last week where Jillian Harris finally picked her man, Ed Swiderski.

Dating in the Dark is a new show by ABC which has become popular. For each episode, 6 singles spend time in a house where they meet and talk with each other in the dark. No one in the house has any idea on what the other persons physical attributes are. At the end of the show the contestants must pick their match and then each person is unveiled. It is the ultimate experiment in, does looks really matter?

Another new dating show that just started on the Fox Network is called More to Love. It is from the creator of The Bachelor. More to Love works very similar to The Bachelor except, the "real world" guy, gets to pick from a group of women who come in "all shapes and sizes".

Here is a list (in no particular order) by EW.com of more new and old Dating/Relationship shows:

  • Change of Heart
  • A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila
  • Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire
  • Temptation Island
  • Flavor of Love
  • The Littlest Groom
  • Playing It Straight
  • Blind Date: Uncensored
  • Mr. Personality
  • Married By America
  • Rock of Love
  • Joe Millionaire
