The share price of Match Group Inc. dropped after a disappointing third quarter earnings report, signaling that consumer interest in paying for dating app subscriptions continues to wane.

According to Business Insider, Match Group shares dropped more than 18 percent after the company reported that paying users on its most popular app Tinder fell 4 percent in the third quarter from the same time period last year, to $9.9 million. The revenue decline for Tinder has been continuous the past few quarters, and Match Group says it expects this slowdown to continue in the fourth quarter.

Hinge continues to be the star of Match Group’s offerings, growing 36 percent year-over-year, though its userbase is still a fraction of Tinder’s.

Young singles in India are turning to new and unexpected platforms to expand their networks, including LinkedIn for dating and Bumble for finding a job.

According to India Today, a recent survey from DatingNews.com found that 61 percent of respondents aged 35 to 40 said they have found their dates on LinkedIn. And 52 percent aged 20 to 40 said they looked to apps like LinkedIn to find dates.

Traditionally, LinkedIn has been a networking platform for careers, but lately people have been turning away from dating apps and gravitating to other social platforms, and especially to LinkedIn. At first, this trend was being reported in the US, but now it seems to be global.

A new study found that men who post pictures with their dogs have a higher match rate on dating apps than those who don’t.

According to the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science which published the study, men who wanted long-term relationships also tended to pose with their dogs for dating app photos, compared to those looking for short-term flings, who were much more likely to pose with status symbols like boats or motorcycles, or show off their bare chests.

The study looked at 750 dating profiles, with 225 men and women each seeking long-term relationships, and 225 men looking for a casual relationship.

POF Dating Trends 2024 Study

Plenty of Fish has published their annual dating trends study and found that many young singles are using terms like “smutten” and “freak matching” to describe their dating experiences.

Each year there are new words in the cultural zeitgeist to describe dating scenarios, and Plenty of Fish has delved into what is trending. The company surveyed 6,000 U.S. members and found that TikTok and Instagram continue to heavily influence peoples’ perspectives on dating, though terms might have evolved.

According to their press release, one dating trend POF found was that 33 percent of singles said they have felt “smutten,” (a play on smut and smitten), fantasizing about their own dating lives based on characters from tv shows and romance novels that they have enjoyed. (Forbidden love and enemies to lovers are popular romance tropes, and over a third of respondents said they imagine their dates mimicking these storylines.) More women have looked for these fantasies to play out in their dating lives than men (women at 40 percent, men at 28 percent), though both sexes do this.

Tinder Launches New Initiative with Vote.Org to Encourage Voting Ahead of US Elections

Dating app Tinder is launching the in-app “Take Action Center” along with partner Vote.org to encourage people to register to vote and make a voting plan ahead of the November elections in the U.S.

According to Tinder’s press release, the Take Action Center is powered by Vote.org to make it easy for people to get the information they need to prepare for election season, including where to register to vote or how to check voter registration status, how to request a mail-in ballot, and where to vote (whether in-person, early voting, or dropping a ballot in the mail). Vote.org offers a range of information to voters, including polling locations and voter registration status. Tinder users who participate can also receive “I Voted” digital stickers to post on their profiles.

To help drive turnout, Tinder and Vote.org will also provide a GOTV (get out the vote) food truck outside of the Taylor Swift Eras Tour in Indianapolis, November 2-3. The food truck will feed concertgoers as well as provide them information about their voter registration and voting options including their polling locations (even for those traveling from other states).

One Quarter of Married People Under 40 In Japan Met on Dating Apps

A new study from Japan found that one in four married couples under the age of 40 met through a dating app, showing a cultural shift away from friends and family networks.

Japan’s children and families agency conducted a nationwide survey in July of this year, targeting 20,000 people (18,000 married and 2,000 unmarried) between the ages of 15 and 39, according to Japan Times. Researchers found that 25.1 percent of married respondents met their partner through a dating app, compared to 20.5 percent who met them through work, or 9.9 percent who met through school.

The study also found that 57 percent of married respondents said they had used a dating app (even if they didn’t meet their partners with one), compared to only 27 percent of unmarried respondents, according to Japan Times.
