FriendFinder Networks History Summary
Friend Finder Networks (FFN) was originally named Various, Inc. and was founded in 1996 by Andrew Conru. The company primarily deals in adult entertainment, online dating, and other social networking services. Its original flagship online dating service was FriendFinder but within months quickly included various spin-off services targeting different territories and niche categories, such as Asia FriendFinder, the South America-focused Amigos.com, and Christian dating website BigChurch. Early on FFN discovered that adult oriented sites that dealt with hookups, alternative lifestyles, and adult webcams was the most profitable. Services like Adult FriendFinder and Alt.com continue to this day to be FFN main source of revenue.
In 2007, the company Various was acquired by the owners of Penthouse magazine, and adopted its current name Friend Finder Networks. Issues with debt from bad business decisions caused FFN in 2016 to sell the Penthouse brand.
In 2008, FFN filed for a $460 million initial public offering. In August 2013, FriendFinder Networks was delisted from the NASDAQ due to its stock trading below the $1 mark. On September 16, 2013, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Since then FriendFinder Networks has reorganization and founder Andrew Conru, was once again named the company's chairman and CEO. All indications suggest that FriendFinder is now profitable but still has millions of dollars of debt on their books.
