Some people have this vision of the type of people on your average online dating site. Assuming the very worst version of this vision, here's what the legions of online daters are:

  • Losers
  • Freaks
  • Geeks/Nerds
  • Psychopaths/Murderers/Con Artists
  • Depressed People
  • The Mentally Ill
  • Ugly People
  • Fat People
  • People with No Social Skills
  • People with No Friends
  • People with No Life
  • Etc, etc, etc.

While ANY subset of the population will include the people above, it is unfair to assume that online dating contains a majority of the "undesirables" of society. Let me give you a little example of who is really doing online dating:

Match.com demographics (from Match Mediaroom):

  • Male 56%, Female 44%
  • 29% are under age 30; 51% are ages 30-49; 20% are age 50+
  • 79% have some college or college degree
  • 69% non-smokers, 24% smokers, (7% did not answer)
  • 56% do not have children, 23% have children who at least sometimes live at home, 19% have children away from home, (2% did not answer)
  • The 50+ age group is Match.com’s fastest growing demographic

I've been involved in the industry for over a decade, first as a customer, and now as part of my business. I've met teachers, doctors, dentists, lawyers, physical therapists, avionics technicians, marketing directors, coaches, computer programmers... you name the career, you'll find them doing online dating.

Losers and freaks? Sure, there are a few. But I'm sure you can name a few losers and freaks you've met in your extended social circle.

Axe murderers and con artists? Sure, they're out there too. But as long as you're smarter than the average bear, avoiding them is really easy.

What about my privacy? Good question. I'll write about that next!

Online dating is not for losers and freaks. It's for people who want to find the love of their life and just haven't had the opportunities to do so in their regular social circles. Give it a shot, you'll be surprised who is out there waiting for you.
