Dating and the Lunar New Year Holiday

Dating app Bumble is taking the popular Lunar New Year holiday and launching a promotional celebration for its user base in Asia.

The “Bumble Lo Hei: Toss Love into Your New Year” campaign says it will “spice up” holiday traditions and give the celebration a romantic twist for those seeking love in 2024. Bumble will give away exclusive gift packages for users to help them “manifest” a great love life this coming year, and encourage them to take charge of their own love journeys.

The promotion was inspired by the traditional Lunar New Year “prosperity toss,” or “lo hei.”

eHarmony Lesbian Couple Ad

eharmony unveiled a new ad for its dating app in time for dating’s busiest season, but the LGBTQ+-led campaign did not go over well with Christian groups.

The ad features a lesbian couple snuggled up on the couch waiting for their laundry to finish. When the buzzer goes off, one partner gets up to retrieve the laundry while the other lies on the bed, waiting and smiling. Then her partner unloads all the clean laundry on her, and she is elated and taking in the warmth of the clothes fresh out of the dryer. The tagline for the ad is: “Get who gets you.”

According to The Pink News, despite the cute and feel-good premise, right wing Christian activist group One Million Moms has launched a petition to remove the ad from the air, and so far have received over 12,000 signatures. The organization claimed that the ad was airing during “prime time” when children were likely to be watching television and was “crossing a line that eharmony should have never crossed,” according to the petition.

Tinder UK Ad for Gen Z

Tinder has launched a new branded ad in the UK, aimed at a younger generation of daters that are turning to the app to expand their social circles as well as to find love.

The new ad debuted on Boxing Day in the UK according to The Drum, and stars a young woman named Ava who just moved to London. She calls her sister to express her loneliness, and wonders if she made the right decision in moving. Her sister suggests getting out of the house and meeting some people, and so her new life in London takes off with the help of Tinder.

She begins dating, but it doesn’t go exactly as she’d hoped. Her first date challenges her values of working hard and striving by admitting that he doesn’t find ambition “that attractive.” Then she meets Maya for a date, and while the two discover that they aren’t really attracted to each other, they turn out to be great friends. She goes on more dates, none of whom really spark romantic love interest, but offer her a wider social circle and new possibilities for meeting someone special as they introduce her to their friends.
