What do you think a woman means when she says she needs 'space'?

Does she want to be an astronut? I have heard this phrase all my dating life.
I think some women would not have enough 'sapce' if they had the entire state of Texas to themselves.
What do you think and I am particularly interested in response from women.
Please decode this phrase.
I can understand if you want to see a woman 7 days a week (like in a marriage) but she is not ready for that much time committment) but it is utter BS to say I need a few months to get over you saying I got fat (even though its the truth and you said it in a nice way and suggested maybe a gym membership would be a good gift.

your joke about outer space is funny, and perhaps apt
i can't speak for all women, but when i say 'i need space' it means one of 2 things.. either, (a) i've dumped you already don't you get the point? just leave me alone -- a pretty clear message i'd say. or (b) i'm feeling pressure to be someone i'm not and it's someone i don't necessarily want to become. i need to relieve this pressure in order to figure out who i am and who i want to become.
they are variants of the same emotion... being alone (space) can relieve this pressure but being close to someone you trust can relieve it better.
whether you're dealing with a case (a) or (b) depends on your relationship with this person, and should indicate whether the best course of action is to leave the woman alone or to assure her and show her some affection.
of course it's not necessarily your actions that communicate this pressure (even if you said she's too fat), but you're the messenger. expect this hostility. gender roles can be stressful.. dating requires compassion.
hope this helps -

In response to this quote, most of the women are really looking for another guy when all I have wanted is some companisonship.
So if a woman is not interested, say it.
IF a woman is not interested, then say it. I have not read of too many dying from meeeting a gyuy on the personals except in bad movies.
Most guys don't want to spend time or money on a woman that is not interested.
I would rather be alone with my cash than spend it one someone who is trying to find someone else and just using me to pass the time untill he shows up.
