After visiting a number of very different boards for singles, having gone to a bunch of speed-dating parties, etc etc, I got a pretty good idea of 2 main problems which have been causing such hell for people like us who want to meet someone.

It wasn't until over a year after I went to my last speed-dating party in December '07, that I realized the main reason why so few of us are getting any results. See, some of us are players, and some of us are keepers. The players are the ones who like to tease, hustle, score some free sex, then move on... they live for the present, and commitment is something they want to avoid. Keepers OTOH have no use for one-night stands or hookups, because they have one eye on the future... marriage, home sweet home and all that.

Most dating/singles outfits make no effort to separate the keepers from the players, so that explains their low success rate. If a player finds another player, or a keeper finds another keeper, then it's probably just sheer luck. Expensive matchmaking services just don't appeal to players (at least not much), but OTOH it's the keepers who usually get burned by these outfits. Often, the keepers get so damn disappointed with the whole thing, they take themselves off the market.

Second, most singles don't have the foggiest idea what kind of person they want to meet... they just have the attitude, "turn on the juice and see what shakes loose". Is it any wonder there are so many divorces in this country?

The only way to nudge the situation in the right direction, is for more of us to think about what we're looking for in a partner and decide if we're a keeper or a player, or else stay out of the game until you make up your mind. Not only will fewer of us end up getting fleeced by the dating industry, but we might end up making smarter decisions and not getting into so many bad relationships.
