Here's what I did:
Figure out what kind of local singles club you want to start. If you have a laser printer, great---buy an extra toner cartridge and a ream of paper. Design a catchy 1/4 sheet ad for your club, print up the whole ream of paper, and get the sheets cut up into quarters. Go out before dawn on a Saturday or Sunday morning, place your ads on widshields of parked cars until you run out, then go back and wait for the calls and e-mails to arrive. Plan on a response rate of 1 person for every 100 ads. This sounds a lot more expensive than it really is.

Don't be discouraged if the respondents are mostly men. When the women figure out it's not some gimmick, they'll start bringing their female friends along, and next thing you know, your club will need more men. Just don't try something stupid that will turn women off, like promising that your club will have free sex orgies.

Also, don't be intimidated if angry people from dating services try to intimidate you into giving up. Point out to them that you're offering to treat their former customers decently, for a fraction of the price.
