Welcome to the brave new world of falling in love - one that doesn’t just use technology to find matches, but also uses it to analyze your dates and determine the best of your romantic options. Evolve, launched April 2017, employs machine learning to help singles identify their dating patterns and make smarter choices.
It sounds like the creation of a sci-fi novel or a Black Mirror episode, but Evolve calls itself something much less intimidating: “the world’s first dating and relationship manager.” Unlike other dating apps, you’ll find no matches on Evolve - instead the app is designed to help you date with intention by offering personalized insights backed by data.
Each time you go on a date, log onto Evolve to enter details about the outing. Rate your date from 1 to 10, and indicate whether it ended with a kiss or “more.” Select your match’s pros and cons (the choices include “Trustworthy,” “Sketchy,” “Ambitious,” “Baggage,” “Shared Values,” and “Great Chemistry”) from a list of options. You can also add photos and basic info about people into Evolve, either manually or by letting the app pull the information for you automatically using a screenshot.
After inputting data about your match, rate your chosen location so others can learn from your experience. You can even add notes or describe the date entirely in emojis.
Over time, as you add more and more information to the app, Evolve begins to evaluate your patterns and assess your compatibility with each potential partner. Your dates are sorted into categories like “Relationship Potential,” “Figuring It Out,” and “Just Having Fun.” Select a date’s profile to see a list of their pros and cons, as well as numerical ratings on factors like “Smarts,” “Looks,” “Compatibility,” and “Excitement.” When a relationship has run its course, opt to move them to “the Past” to remove them from your feed.
Evolve also offers insights based on the dating behaviours of other singles in your age range. In case you’ve ever wondered if you’re scoring as many first-date hook-ups as your peers, Evolve has the answer. And if your date spots are duds, the app can help you find better ones. View a map of popular places near you, as well as ratings from other daters and stats on how successful dates there have been.
On the Insights page, you’ll find tabs for Trends and Tips, Select the first to see comparisons between you and other similar singles (e.g. “How do your first dates end?” and “Where are people like you finding their first dates?”), as well as data that reveal your personal dating habits. You may discover that you’re most compatible with people in the 30-34 age range who you met on Bumble and score highly in the Smarts category.
Think of Evolve as your personal dating coach, without the need for any human interaction. That may or may not sound appealing, and it may or may not be a healthy way to approach your love life, but if you’re intrigued, you can download Evolve in the App Store now.
