Tom Shone decided to give internet dating a try after breaking up with his girlfriend a month before. Guess who was the first person to contact him on a dating site? If you said his ex-girlfriend, you would be right.
Loved your profile on Nerve. Glad to hear you’re feeling so “chipper” these days – Natalie.
Tom hadn't meant for anyone who really knew him to read his profile, especially his ex. You always put your best foot forward when writing a dating profile, which made it look like to his ex-girlfriend, that he had forgotten all about the heartbreak and tears from the month before. She did later apologize that day for the email, and said it was just a shock to see the profile. Tom told her that he wasn't using the dating site to go on dates, he was just window shopping.
After using the dating site for a while, Tom figured that a lot of people join online dating sites just after a break up like he did, when they are not ready to commit to someone new. He calls it "the online version of buying yourself some new shoes". He further states that it is healthier than a rebound romance.
I agree with Tom. I think people who join a dating site right after a breakup and have no real intention of getting back into a relationship and are for the most part, just looking for confirmation that they are still desirable. There is nothing wrong with this, just as long as you don't string other would be online daters along. Maybe on the dating profile, dating sites should add a Just Looking Relationship type, to make it easier to identify these type of new singles. This way, people will not get their hopes up when they come across these types of profiles and, if they think that this person would make a good match for them.
