Gay.com was founded by Mark Elderkin in 1994 and launched in 1996. In 2001 PlanetOut acquired the dating service and by 2007 it was the third highest ranked in it's niche. After a few relaunches and the continuing decline of traffic in October of 2009, Here Media Inc. acquired Gay.com. In 2016, gay.com was then sold to VS Media Inc who in 2017 donated the domain to the Los Angeles LGBT Center. As of 2018 the gay.com domain redirects to their Vanguard Blog (https://vanguardnow.org/).
