Is eHarmony Serious about their Mission?

I also don't know when Warren wrote that article, however the first ever mention I found from eHarmony of their divorce-rate mission is May 2002, (Newsletter volume19).

The divorce rate is commonly measured in three different ways: (1) the current marriage to current divorce ratio, (2) the crude divorce rate (divorces per thousand people), and (3) the refined divorce rate (divorces per thousand women).

[CDC.gov link] says that in 2005, 7.5 per 1,000 people got married and 3.6 per 1,000 got divorced. [Census.gov link] estimated the US population at 296 million in 2005. [Census.gov link] estimates the US female population at 150 million in 2005.

Goal A. To have reduced #1 by 1% in 2005, eharmony had to have prevented 3.6 / 1000 x 296,000,000 x (3.6 / 7.5 - 0.01) = 500 thousand divorces in that year alone.

Goal B. To have reduced #2 by 1% in 2005, eharmony had to have prevented 3.6 / 1000 x 296,000,000 x .01 = 10 thousand divorces in that year alone.

eHarmony reports to have produced 118 marriages per day in 2007 (The Hartford Courant, 6 May 2008), or 43 thousand marriages per year. So I would conclude that it already achieved Goal B.

You said, "it would take over 30 years for eHarmony to reach this goal."

No, of course not. All they have to do for Goal A is prevent 500 thousand divorces a year, or 13,700 divorces a day. They have to increase their effectiveness and the number of people using the eHarmony Singles and eHarmony Marriage service.

Thanks for the more in-depth look at the statistics.

I knew about the new report from eHarmony that they had updated the statistic to over 100 but I didn't realize it was 118 marriages and not 118 people who got married. That is over 3 times better than their previous marriage stat. I did plan on an update to the story when I get the time to point out this fact.

I also now realize my mistake in my calculations. I was calculating how long it would take for eHarmony to achieve 500,000 marriages at their current marriage rate to reach their goal (your Goal A). My thinking was wrong since the U.S. divorce rate is calculated as a ratio every year and I was taking multiple years into account.

So if this is the case (with the new marriage rate numbers) eHarmony is responsible for 43,000 marriages in the last year. We would now need to find out how many eHarmony members who got married in previous years, got divorced last year and then subtract it from 43,000. Whatever this new number is, it is a lot less than 500,000. eHarmony still has a long way to go. After rereading the “Religion, Marriage and eHarmony” article I still feel that Dr. Neil Clark Warren was referring to your Goal A and not Goal B since he mentions “we would positively affect 1 million people”. Did he mention Goal B in another article or newsletter?

I also want to mention a few facts about eHarmony Marriage. This is a relatively new service (2 years or so) and while it does not match people together (so it can’t be included in the eHarmony marriage rate) it does prevent divorces through online therapy. The only real stat that I know (see story) about the service is that it receives 300 to 500 new registrations each day. There is no mention of how many divorces it has helped prevent. If we had this information we could then add it to the statistic.

I still see lots of holes in the story and the statistics but I can’t really fill them in until eHarmony releases more information.
