There are many articles online which talk about dating safety and scammers. I found one recently which had a number of good points on how to protect your credit. We have talked about most of these tips before but it is always good to review them every now and then, not just to protect yourself online, but offline as well. I also included some additional safety tips of my own.

Leave the Income Field Blank

Most dating sites allow you to specify your annual income and your area of employment. Revealing this information may make you a potential target of some scammers.

Style of Writing

Constant spelling and grammar mistakes combined with broken English are a sure sign that the person you are emailing may not be the person he or she says they are. If they are from a city you are familiar with, ask them a question about it that someone only living there would know.

Do not rely on Background Checks

While Background Checks do help you verify information, you must remember that they are not foolproof and do not signify the intent of a person. Most checks just confirm the information the person gave you is true or not, while some may also perform criminal background checks of police databases. Remember while the information may be true, you still might not be dealing with the actual person. They could have stolen the identity of someone.

Avoid Money Discussions

If someone mentions money online or wants details like your social insurance number, instantly cut communication and report them to the dating service.

Trust Your Instincts

You can't just put your finger on it but something is fishy about the person. You should trust your instincts and walk away from the relationship. Your sub conscious probably picked up on a few inconsistencies or red flags.

In general just remember to be careful when meeting anyone new online or off. If you don't let your guard down and keep your private information safe, you shouldn't let a few bad apples ruin what online dating is to most people, an enjoyable and exciting experience.
