Popular dating app Tinder crashed on Thursday night, ahead of a long holiday weekend in the United States.
The International Business Times reported that Tinder had crashed around 10:00pm Eastern time, and users were having problems retrieving their messages, contacting their matches and even logging in. Some users reported losing their matches as well. Users on the Dating Sites Reviews Forum also had issues with Tinder
Angry Tinder users voiced their frustration over social media, making jokes about Tinder failing just when they got some matches, were trying to contact their dates to meet, or downloaded the latest version of the app.
One user joked:
“Tinder crashes before it opens which also describes my love life #tinder”
Tinder responded over social media, acknowledging the problem:
“Some users have reported that the app is crashing on iOS. We're looking into it. Stay tuned!
— Tinder (@Tinder) September 1, 2016”
The crash comes at a bad time, as dating app usage typically goes up over the weekend when people are looking to meet, or perhaps get away from a date gone wrong to find someone new. A holiday weekend is especially problematic, as messaging and activity is at a high point.
According to recent reports, Tinder has more than 50 million active users who check their account an average of 11 times each day. Tinder users spend an average of 90 minutes per day on the app.
The problem appears to occur with mostly iOS users, although some problems have been reported for those using Android phones.
"I've been using Tinder for a while now, but just starting today the second I open the app it crashes instantly. I've already reinstalled the app, updated it and turned off my phone. Any other ideas as to why this is happening?" complained a distraught Tinder user, as reported by Tech Times.
Unfortunately, Tinder’s troubleshooting advice appears to make the problem worse. For those who uninstalled and then reinstalled the app, as per Tinder’s recommendation, when they tried to log in, the app repeatedly crashed. Some users lost all the matches they had when they used the newly installed version, too.
The problem could be tied to the latest update for Tinder, which was made available to users starting August 31st. Tinder hasn’t indicated the source of the problem, or that it is somehow linked to the latest update, but is working on the problem.
In the meantime, Tinder users will have to check out other apps this Labor Day weekend, or perhaps meet people the old-fashioned way: in person. For more information on the dating app you can check out our review of Tinder.
