We started getting reports that the dating service Plenty of Fish (aka POF) was experiencing some downtime on Thursday July 28th at 6pm EST for about an hour and then the issue seemed to fix itself.
That little blip was a precursor of things to come as by 2am on July 29th both the POF website and apps went down again and stayed down until about 2pm the same day. Most users seem to experience about 12 hours of downtime with others still reporting issues as late as 11pm that Friday night. During Friday afternoon some users experienced POF to be up and working for a bit and then all of a sudden going down again.
Initially the message that we received (see included image as well) indicated technical issues:
Oh Carp! Looks like we've run into some issues. Visit our help centre to get back out there.
Later on the message was changed to one indicating POF was now under maintenance and Tech support was trying to fix the problem:
Oh Carp! Looks like we're down for scheduled maintenance. Just keep swimming and we'll be back shortly.
POF acknowledged the issues on their Twitter account.
As you can see on July 28th at 7:47pm POF first reported having technical difficulties which prevented people from using the website and app.
Then the next day on July 29 at 2:56pm POF tweeted that everything was fixed. They further explained that they had some tech issues which lasted much longer than planned but their dating service is now back up and running.
Later that same day at 6:40pm POF Customer Service sent out 2 additional tweets. The first one was a message about showing their appreciation of POF users and their patience. The tweet explained POF is giving out 20 Live! credits to anyone who experienced issues. All you must do to receive these credits is visit the Help Center and send a ticket with 24 hours. Please note, this means the offer expires today (July 30) at 6:40pm EST.
The second tweet then explained that the technical issue was related to hardware problems and that no one has to worry about privacy as "absolutely no data went outside our walls or app".
It's good to know that it was a hardware only issue. During the pandemic it is harder to get parts so that may be the reason why the service was down longer than expected.
POF has had major disruptions and technical issues in the past (like most other services). Here is a list of the ones we have recorded with the most recent one being 6 years ago:
