 Tinder Course Let's Talk Consent

Tinder has just launched a new online course in partnership with youth platform Yuvaa to educate young daters on consent.

The 90-minute self-learning course entitled “Let’s Talk Consent” will be available for free on the Coursera platform[*1] , and is intended to be a resource for young adults in India to learn about interpersonal consent.

According to CNBC[*2] , there are five main topics in the course: “understanding consent in personal relationships, setting and enforcing personal boundaries, recognizing signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships via red, green and gray flags, and navigating online and offline interactions with safety and respect.”

The course will use interactive elements like surveys, assignments and real-life examples so that people can better understand these concepts in their day-to-day interactions.

"The course contains information on the meaning of consent, navigating consent across stages of a relationship, how to ask and give consent as well as the nuance of withdrawing consent. It also includes frequently asked questions on the topic by Tinder users, advice on steps to take in the event your consent was breached, what the law says about it and how to substantiate a breach," Aahana Dhar, director of communications for Tinder in India told The Economic Times of India.

According to a survey in 2022 by YouGov, about 65 percent of young adults in metro cities in India took steps to understand consent, and about sixty percent said they were seeking more resources and spaces to discuss consent.

"Our conversations with Tinder users and the survey with young adult daters in India gave us an insight into the overwhelming need to create safe spaces for conversations on boundaries and mutual respect, which are not often discussed in our society," Dhar told the Economic Times[*3] .

The course is an extension of Tinder’s “Let’s Talk Consent” initiative, which was originally launched in 2021. The initiative featured some videos of real-life situations that young daters may find themselves in, and how to respond. Since then, Tinder has launched a resource center with short films like “Closure” and “We Need to Talk,” according to the company’s press release. The company is also hosting safe dating workshops for Indian college students in three different cities.

Yuvaa CEO Kevin Lee told CNBC that the new online course provides practical strategies for both online and real-life interactions, “emphasizing safety, open communication, and mutual respect for personal boundaries,” the media outlet reported.
