Tinder has updated its community guidelines with AI-based warnings that detect problematic messages and behavior of users and issue warning messages to adhere to the community guidelines, or they will be removed from the app.

The new warnings, according to Tinder’s press release, center around three categories: authenticity, respect and inclusivity.

The warnings come as an update to the Community Guidelines, which serve as the basis for expected behavior of users on the app. They aim to protect users against harassment, and “advertising and impersonation,” according to the release[*1] .

Tinder’s new warnings originate from its current AI-based features “Does This Bother You” and “Are You Sure,” which respectively ask users if the problematic language in a message bothers them, or if they are sure they want to send a message with problematic language. The warnings will be sent to the user who violated the Community Guidelines, with an explanation of what violation occurred. The app will also deliver information on what is expected of the user while on the app.

Once given a warning, the user will be unable to delete it. If they repeatedly violate the warning, they risk being removed from the app.

Tinder wrote in the release: “The majority of Tinder’s global users are aged 18-25 years old, and they often come to Tinder to begin their dating journey. These new warnings aim to provide additional guidance to users, helping to inform them of inappropriate behavior, as well as offering an immediate opportunity to change their actions moving forward.”

Tinder noted that 53 percent of people around the world who are under 30 use dating apps to meet people, which is why the new updates to the Community Guidelines are particularly important to younger Tinder users.

“By providing greater transparency to users about their behavior, not only are we enabling them to immediately ‘course correct’ but also foster a better experience for the wider Tinder community,” said Nicole Blumenfeld, Tinder’s VP of Trust & Safety Operations, in the release.

Tinder along with other dating apps has faced challenges with online harassment, spam accounts, and scams on its platform. The dating app now has Photo Verification to ensure that a user is who they say they are, as well as an Incognito Mode where users can temporarily hide their profile from other users. Block Profile also gives users the option of blocking someone they don’t want to see come up in their matches.

“The new warnings aim to bring greater transparency to improve behavior and continue to enable Tinder to be a leading platform in enabling authentic human connections,” the press release stated.

The global rollout of the new warnings will go live in a few weeks, according to Tinder. For more on this dating app, check out our review of Tinder.
