Tinder is heading in a bold new direction that includes regenerative AI and a “fresh and new feel” according to its chief product officer Mark van Ryswyk.
At the Reuters Momentum Festival, the CPO shared that he and his team have been studying common user problems and have identified three key elements to focus on: realness, respect and relevancy. Van Ryswyk said on stage: “There’s an opportunity for us to deliver something by end of year that’s going to start to tackle these things,” he added.
According to Fast Company[*1] , Match Group refused to expand on these comments, but the company has been focused on rolling out premium features and appealing to its fastest-growing market Gen Z.
Van Ryswyk noted that generative AI will have a “key role” in matching and helping people connect. Tinder has more than ten years of data to help users understand what does and doesn’t work for profiles, photos, and bios, which is helpful to the company’s efforts. He also said that AI could help users choose photos and write bios. (ChatGPT and other AI tools are already helping users craft messages, which has created some controversy among dating app users.)
Generative AI would help users craft messages, similar to LinkedIn’s or Gmail’s models. The app would recommend opening messages or suggest how to complete sentences or offer responses as a user is typing.
“Where with these rich data sets can we use to generative AI, not to write the conversation, not to have AI talk to AI, but just to give those little assists, those little nudges to get you through that,” van Ryswyk said at the event, according to Fast Company. “Because often what happens is that’s a moment you stop and maybe you just don’t send that message. And maybe that becomes a misconnection. And wouldn’t that be just so much more powerful if we can just help you find those words to start a great conversation?”
More than 40 percent of Tinder’s users are looking for a serious relationship, according to van Ryswyk. He said that focusing on “realness” means adding more depth to profiles beyond the photos so potential dates get a more complete picture. “Relevancy” refers to connecting serious daters with one another.
It should be noted that a recent survey of Tinder users found that half of respondents aren’t interested in meeting offline, and two-thirds were on Tinder but already in relationships. The survey results were gathered from more than 1,300 respondents ranged from ages 18 to 84.
“We’re stepping in and making a bold change at Tinder,” van Ryswyk said. “It’s a product that you’re going to see evolve significantly, and it’s going to feel fresh and new.”
