Hinge Date Night

Hinge is giving some love to single Moms this Valentine’s Day, offering $100 in childcare stipends so that they can make plans for a date.

According to the company’s press release[*1] , the popular dating app kicked off the campaign on Friday, February 4th ahead of Valentine’s Day. Users who have selected “Have Children” in their profiles will receive an opt-in notification at that time. To be eligible to receive the gift, those who opt in must also comment on someone’s profile that same day. The gift cards will be sent via email to each selected parent, according to the release.

The campaign is in partnership with French singer-songwriter Soko, who is also a single parent. Soko wanted to focus especially on the LGBTQ+ community and encourage discussions on “how to prioritize responsibilities as a parent while also making time to find someone special,” according to the release.

Hinge will give away up to $25,000 via the gift cards, and this isn’t the first time. Hinge began offering single Moms this Valentine’s Day gift in 2020.

The dating app discovered through its own studies that 63 percent of single people with children find that it’s difficult to go on dates because they don’t have or can’t find affordable childcare. An even larger portion of LGBTQ+ singles – almost 73 percent – didn’t have the time or resources to date either. Almost 60 percent of those surveyed said they enlist a family member to babysit so they can go out, but others who don’t have friends or family close by or available struggle with affording childcare.

Some single parents (53%) said they have found it difficult to date even if they do have access to childcare, because a lot of singles don’t want to date someone with kids. But there is a bright spot. According to Essence Magazine[*2] , Hinge also looked into the top ten cities for single people with kids and are out there dating and having a good time, with San Diego, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City topping the list. San Francisco, Phoenix, Virginia Beach, Orlando, Miami and Dallas also made the list.

Hinge hopes to help ease the barriers to finding love for single parents, who can worry about one less thing when searching for a date for Valentine’s Day.

Soko said in Hinge’s announcement: “Sometimes, I get lost in that world where I’m ‘just’ being a mom non-stop. I forget my core essence and can’t even imagine going on a date or having a romantic life. That's why it's important for us to just put ourselves out there. To try to find love beyond parenthood. Even if you’re not in a place to do it right now, just reminding yourself you deserve is important.”
