eHarmony has released the dating trends it expects to see in 2024, based on its extensive annual survey of users, including new perspectives on what it means to date someone who’s “out of your league.”
The study also reveals changing attitudes about asking dates how many people they’ve slept with, and shares the biggest love life regrets of users and how they can impact dating habits going into the new year.
According to eHarmony’s press release[*1] (local copy), different generations have different perspectives on what “out of your league” means. Among Gen Z daters, 68 percent define it in terms of physical attractiveness, 43 percent professional success, and 42 percent financial stability. However, when it comes to what they look for and value in a partner, the top quality is emotional intelligence (28%) followed by humor (23%) and intelligence (16%).
Among millennials, 26 percent look for emotional intelligence, 19 percent value intelligence as a crucial trait in a partner, and 15 percent value physical attractiveness.
One big shift in attitudes towards sex is that people are no longer asking their partners how many people they’ve slept with. Sixty-seven percent of daters said they don’t plan to ask their dates, and only 24 percent say it matters at all.
Gen Z daters were least likely to communicate what they want sexually with their partners. Millennials in comparison have more sex and communicate their sexual needs with their partners more frequently. Thirty-eight percent of millennials said they want more sex in 2024.
eHarmony also asked about regrets daters had in the past year, and what they would do differently in 2024. There is a trend especially among Gen Z to date more intentionally in the new year (47 percent). Nearly half said they want to find a long-term partner. Forty-eight percent of Gen Z daters said they had regrets about dating this past year, and 21 percent said that being love-bombed was their biggest regret. Thirty-seven percent wished they had prioritized themselves over dating.
Millennials had their own regrets this past year. Twenty-seven percent of Millennial singles wished they had been more proactive with someone they were attracted to, and 49 percent said they wanted a healthier relationship in 2024.
eHarmony commissioned Harris Interactive for the survey. The Dating Diaries 2024 Trends Edition: Playbook for Dating, Sex and Relationships, was conducted online between September 20th, 2023 and October 3rd, 2023 and surveyed over 1,600 participants. Respondents qualified if they were aged 21+ and were either married, cohabiting, in a relationship, or were currently dating. Results were weighted to be nationally representative by age, gender, and region.
