It looks like POF has kept things the same since the launch of the verification feature in November of 2019. I couldn't find a direct link on the Plenty of Fish Help Center but after a Google search I did find these orphaned help pages:

If you don’t have a mobile phone number, or don’t wish to provide your mobile phone number, you can have your POF account verified by writing to their customer care team at
CSR@pof.com for assistance.

In regards to the phone number you can use this help page states:
- You can only verify with a mobile number you own.
- You must be able to receive SMS texts to the mobile number you are trying to verify.
- POF can't send your code via any other method due to security reasons.
- The phone number used to verify your account will be retained as a one-way hash for the duration of the account and then disposed of in accordance with POF's Privacy Policy.

Here is some more info regarding the mobile phone verification (also call Multi-Factor Authorization or MFA) if you are receiving an invalid phone number error when you try to authenticate. This is because:
- POF requires a phone number that has the ability to receive text messages.
- POF does not accept landlines.
- One-off text messaging services are not allowed
- You may be asked to verify again if you ever login from a new device.
Finally this page also states:
If you do not own a cell phone or are unable to receive text messages you are still welcome to use our site. Please contact Plenty of Fish Customer Service, you may be asked to verify your account another way.
I hope this helps everyone.
