Tinder announced the launch of Vibes, an all-new event feature that presents pop-up questions on the app for limited periods of time to drive user engagement.

According to The Verge, Vibes events will occur once a week for about 48 hours. During the event, users are asked a series of questions on a range of topics, from pop culture to personal habits. If they decide to participate by responding, their answers will populate their profiles for other participants to see and only for a limited time (about 72 hours) before they disappear.

The questions are intended to be conversation starters as well as fun and a bit insightful, like: “are you always 20 minutes early or ten minutes late?” Or this one revealed in an article by Tech Crunch: “How do you feel about cooking?” Participants can choose answers like “a nicer Gordon Ramsay”, “Low-key would rather starve”, or “For survival only”.

Participants will be able to see each other’s responses directly in the chat window, too. If two users match, their answers appear in the chat together. The answers will only be visible to other Vibes participants.

Tinder is also hoping Vibes will lead users to video chat each other over the app, a feature that surged during the pandemic and still seems to be going strong while people resume meeting each other in person for dates. The Vibes feature offers the option to continue conversations over video chat.

Because there isn’t a set time for Vibes events to occur, Tinder users are expected to check into the app more often to see if they are happening. Tech Crunch also pointed out that if the feature takes off, it would be a good way for Tinder to have a “dial it could turn any time it needed to drive more engagement for its app.”

The company launched its first interactive content series Swipe Night in late 2019 and it was so popular they are in production for a second season. With Swipe Night, users could watch and make choices about what to do next, which would take them to different scenarios of the story and ultimately different endings. The answers they chose also populated their profiles, sparking conversation.

The Vibes announcement comes on the heels of parent company Match Group’s earnings report, which showed that engagement on the Tinder app for the first quarter of this year surpassed pre-pandemic numbers. Daily swipes were up 15 percent, messages were up 19 percent and the company also noted that conversations were 32 percent longer compared to before Covid lockdowns.

Tinder has already begun rolling out Vibes in certain regions, but it will be released globally in late May. For more information on this dating app, please read our Tinder review.
